Jahrhunderts, Note: 1, Universität Potsdam (Philosophisches Institut), Veranstaltung: Gleichheit als politische Idee – zur jüngeren Kritik am Egalitarismus, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: „Die liberale Demokratie lebt aus der inneren Spannung zwischen der Privilegierung von Eigentumsrechten einerseits und einem substantiellen Begriff von Gleichheit andererseits, zu dem heute auch die Menschenrechte gezählt werden.“ Diese Überlegung äußerte die Soziologin Saskia Sassen unlängst in einem Artikel, in dem sie sich mit den Ursachen der Krise der Demokratien in den „westlichen“ Staaten auseinandersetzt. Für Sassen scheint festzustehen, dass soziale Ungleichheit etwas negatives und Gleichheit etwas erstrebenswertes ist. Mit dieser Ansicht sind viele Menschen vertraut und in vielen Hinterköpfen mögen bei dieser Überlegung das ferne Echo der Parolen politischer Emanzipationsbewegungen seit der französischen Revolution und der Ausrufung der Menschenrechte erklingen. Die moralisch intuitive Annahme, dass Gleichheit per se etwas mit Gerechtigkeit zu tun hat, geriet in jüngster Vergangenheit jedoch vermehrt in die Kritik zahlreicher Philosophen und Philosophinnen. Der Begriff der politischen Gleichheit ist in der philosophischen Diskussion heute keineswegs so unumstritten, wie es für eine Demokratie, die sich ständig auf dieses Prinzip beruft, von Vorteil wäre. Auch wenn die Debatte viel weiter zurückreicht, so hat sie in den letzten drei Dekaden des 20. Jahrhunderts gehörig an Brisanz gewonnen. Dabei entwickelte sich die akademische Diskussion, die vornehmlich aber nicht nur, im angloamerikanischen Raum geführt wurde und wird von einer „Equality-of-What?“-Frage zu einer grundlegenderen „Why-Equality?“-Debatte, die nun den Egalitarismus als politisches Prinzip grundsätzlich in Frage stellte.

Over the past ten years the PISA assessment has risen to strategic prominence in the international education policy discourse. Sponsored, organized and administered by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), PISA seems well on its way to being institutionalized as the main engine in the global accountability regime. The goal of this book is to problematize this development and PISA as an institution-building force in global education. It scrutinizes the role of PISA in the emerging regime of global educational governance and questions the presumption that the quality of a nation’s school system can be evaluated through a standardized assessment that is insensitive to the world’s vast cultural and institutional diversity. The book raises the question of whether PISA’s dominance in the global educational discourse runs the risk of engendering an unprecedented process of worldwide educational standardization for the sake of hitching schools more tightly to the bandwagon of economic efficiency, while sacrificing their role to prepare students for independent thinking and civic participation.
