March 1554. Twenty-year-old Princess Elizabeth Tudor is imprisoned in the Tower of London for suspected treason. Imprisoned in another section of the Tower is Lord Robert Dudley, age twenty-one and Elizabeth's childhood friend and cherished companion. So close but so far apart, except for when their minds can touch. Both have been trained by the secretive astrologer and master of secret sciences John Dee. Enemies plot to take down the Tudor princess because of her claim to the throne of England, but a band of secret supporters unite behind her to keep Elizabeth Tudor alive. Robert has already been sentenced to death for taking up arms in his family's plot to place Lady Jane Grey on the throne. Now that Queen Mary rules, Elizabeth waits in terror for her own execution order to arrive. Trying circumstances indeed that might break any young adult on the verge of full adulthood. Through mystic connections, Elizabeth cries out with her mind to her secret ally Lord Robert, the only man she can trust - the cherished love of her heart. Will their plans and dreams come to pass, or will they become the smallest footnotes in English history? In the blink of an eye, Elizabeth and Robert discover that their fate is bound together forever. In this imaginative dark fantasy, the author presents a fun alternative history where arcane sciences protect the innocent. The historical outcomes remain the same, but the machinations behind the scenes that keep Elizabeth alive and bring her to the throne, are much influenced by secretive practices and depends on loyal men who bind together in a pledge to serve her interests. The love of Queen Elizabeth I for Lord Robert Dudley lasted the whole of their lives and even now evokes a sense of wonder and fascination. The story could have happened this way. Why not? This novel is dark fantasy Tudor fiction with paranormal elements. Will young Elizabeth wear the crown of thorns? Noble adventurers, dark-robed false priests, conspiring necromancers, all figure in Robert's involvement in the Rakehells - a bluecoated band of one hundred private soldiers who serve Elizabeth's Woodstock jailer Sir Henry Bedingfield. Robert joins with Elizabeth's cousin Sir Henry Carey under the direction of a mysterious Spanish nobleman, Ruy Gomez de Silva, who serves King Philip, consort of Queen Mary, as these true historical figures join together to preserve the last Tudor princess of King Henry VIII's direct line. This novel of Elizabeth and Robert is a PG-rated historical novel of two landmark figures at the early adulthood of their lives, which classifies this novel in the New Adult genre of historical dark fantasy fiction. The book also qualifies under the 'reverse harem' label, where a group of loyal males unite to protect one revered and beloved female, their respected princess Elizabeth Tudor, to serve as her protectors. Robert finds a new master, a true historical figure, Lord Ruy Gomez de Silva, King Philip's closes confidant, who in this version of history conducts him to Philip's court - with a side trip to Woodstock manor where Elizabeth is confined after being freed from the Tower. The third loyal man in their band of three is her loyal cousin Sir Henry Carey. Elizabeth faces a battle of wills to protect her integrity if she is ever released, for her brother-in-law King Philip has his eye upon his wife's winsome younger sister and Mary's court has no Me Two movement to protect even a princess.

New York Times Bestseller Finalist for the 2022 Pulitzer Prize in Biography "Janice P. Nimura has resurrected Elizabeth and Emily Blackwell in all their feisty, thrilling, trailblazing splendor." —Stacy Schiff Elizabeth Blackwell believed from an early age that she was destined for a mission beyond the scope of "ordinary" womanhood. Though the world at first recoiled at the notion of a woman studying medicine, her intelligence and intensity ultimately won her the acceptance of the male medical establishment. In 1849, she became the first woman in America to receive an M.D. She was soon joined in her iconic achievement by her younger sister, Emily, who was actually the more brilliant physician. Exploring the sisters’ allies, enemies, and enduring partnership, Janice P. Nimura presents a story of trial and triumph. Together, the Blackwells founded the New York Infirmary for Indigent Women and Children, the first hospital staffed entirely by women. Both sisters were tenacious and visionary, but their convictions did not always align with the emergence of women’s rights—or with each other. From Bristol, Paris, and Edinburgh to the rising cities of antebellum America, this richly researched new biography celebrates two complicated pioneers who exploded the limits of possibility for women in medicine. As Elizabeth herself predicted, "a hundred years hence, women will not be what they are now."
