Elli ist anders als die anderen Enten, denn sie hat einen durchsichtigen und schillernden Schnabel, für den weder sie selbst noch ein Schnabelarzt eine Erklärung findet. Mit ihrer Mutter kann sie damit auch ganz normal sprechen, nur woanders ist sie wie stumm und erstarrt. Überhaupt ist ihr Gefieder auch seltsam durchsichtig, sodass niemand richtig weiß, wer Elli überhaupt ist. Als sie größer wird, darf sie aufgrund zu großer Unscheinbarkeit auch nicht mehr zur Schule gehen, was sehr schlimm ist, da sie Ärztin werden will! Verzweifelt und traurig flieht sie eines Nachts und trifft dabei auf einen eingefrorenen Baum, mit dem sie auf mysteriöse Art verbunden ist. Jener vertraut ihr sein altes Wissen an und sie erfährt, dass die Enten sich seit jeher in Gefahr befinden. Als Elli dann sogar von der Insel des Nichts zurückkehrt, um den Enten zu helfen, wird sie auf dem Gefängnisberg in einen Käfig gesperrt, bis auf einmal ein außergewöhnliches Licht in die Dunkelheit tritt ... Was löst die Angst aus und ist es überhaupt eine? In einem Nachwort schreibt die Betroffene Autorin aus ihrer persönlichen Sicht über das Phänomen Mutismus und über die Verletzung im Ur-Bedürfnis des Menschen - Zu sein - was aber hier durch die Sprachlosigkeit, hohe Erregung und seelische Starre - zutiefst geschädigt in der Wurzel - in den nebulösen Mutismus-Zustand führt. Es zeigt, welche basalen Erfahrungen zuweilen nötig sind sodass Heilung schließlich damit ineins geht, dass die Pole kippen und umfassende "Ganzwerdung" möglich wird. Neben tiefenpsychologisch-religiösen Aspekten von "Heilung" ist eine weitere "Elli Geschichte" eingebettet, bei der es um diese "Wandlungen" geht. Daneben vier weitere Innenansichten in Form eines Interviews von (ehemals) Betroffenen Erwachsenen, deren Leben von dem Mutismus "verfärbt" wurde. Eines Tages findet Elli den - wie sie einst selbst - erstarrten und stummen Pieps vor der Haustür. Mit dem "Gefahrenobjekt Pieps" flüchtet sie in den Wald und sucht die Schlange, die sie selbst damals geheilt hatte, wobei gleichsam diese Suche zu einer Begegnung mit dem ungewussten Ort der Angst und umgekehrt auch zur Krippe des Lichts wird.
