Elliott Erwitt est né à Paris. Mais il a passé toute sa vie à New York où il vit encore aujourd'hui, au 8e étage d'un immeuble qui surplombe l'ouest de Central Park. Paris, New York. Les villes-monde, sont les deux personnages de cette exposition qui lui rend hommage. Les deux ports d'une galaxie blanche et noire où la photographie fait office de vaisseau -- ou plutôt de capsule sous-marine -- au rythme des "round trip" incessants de l'artiste entre les deux rives de l'Atlantique. Elliott Erwitt, qui a toujours revendiqué son amateurisme, n'a eu de cesse de photographier Paris comme un touriste amusé. Et New York comme un européen. New York, Paris. Deux monstres urbains qui furent aussi le berceau et le sanctuaire créatif de la photographie de rue telle que nous la connaissons depuis les années 1940.Mais Elliott Erwitt n'est ni un humaniste ni un street-photographer... Difficile de le mettre dans le même sac que les Doisneau et les Stettner, les Cartier-Bresson et les Faurer. Peut-être parce qu'il a trop d'esprit. Trop d'humour, trop de mordant pour être raisonnablement comparé aux chapelles consacrées. A moins qu'il ne s'agisse d'une sorte de conscience mélancolique. Une ivresse de fin de bal. Les hommes les plus drôles sont rarement les plus heureux. Allers, retours. "Voyager, c'est être infidèle. Soyez-le sans remords ; oubliez vos amis avec des inconnus" écrivrait Paul Morand. C'est exactement ce que fait Elliott Erwitt depuis soixante-dix ans. Le bal n'est pas encore terminé.
