Curial e Güelfa és una novel·la anònima del segle XV escrita en llengua catalana, desconeguda fins al segle XIX i publicada por primera vegada el 1901. Es tracta d’una obra singular, a cavall entre l’Edat Mitjana i el Renaixement, en què es conjuminen magistralment els components cavalleresc i sentimental i la influència de l’Humanisme. Encara que el protagonista realitza les seues gestes per Itàlia, Alemanya, Hongria, França, Anglaterra, Grècia, Terra Santa, Egipte i Tunis, el seu ambient és bàsicament italià. El seu anonimat i la seva llengua han desorientat els lingüistes i els historiadors de la literatura que s’hi han acostat. La novel·la, ara accessible en anglès, espanyol, francès, portugués i italià — en traduccions promogudes per IVITRA, basades en l’edició filològica del prof. Antoni Ferrando (2007) —, atrau cada vegada més l’atenció dels estudiosos, no sols per la seva redacció exquisida i la seva ben traçada estructura, sinó pel seu ric rerefons cultural europeu. El present volum d’estudis intenta respondre a gran part d’aquests interrogants, amb quaranta aportacions molt rellevants tant en l’aspecte lingüístic com en el cultural. Curial e Güelfa is a 15th century anonymous romance written in Catalan, unknown until the 19th century and first published in 1901. It is a singular work, halfway between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, in which the features of chivalry and sentimentalism and a touch of Humanism are brilliantly combined. Although the main character performs his heroic deeds in Italy, Germany, Hungary, France, England, Greece, the Holy Land, Egypt and Tunisia, the atmosphere is essentially Italian. Its anonymity and its language have always disconcerted the linguists and literary historians who have approached it. The novel, now available in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese and Italian — in translations sponsored by IVITRA, based upon Prof. Antoni Ferrando’s philological edition (2007) — and in German, is increasingly attracting the attention of scholars, not only because of its delighting style and its wonderfully traced structure, but also because of its rich cultural European background. This volume of studies tries to solve most of these questions with forty outstanding contributions, all of them very important both from a linguistic and a cultural point of view.

As language historians we believe that the subject of our study is neither natural languages nor idiolects which speakers have always been able to develop individually (loosely what Chomsky calls L-i), but rather the social constructions of reference shared by all speakers (basically what Chomsky terms as L-e ). In this context the language historian essentially studies how a public L-e is built such that it can be understood as the language of all (i.e. hiding L-i variations) and also how L-e succeed in replacing the primary reality of idiolects, even if only in the imagination. Writing represents a crucial turning point in language construction, because it made it possible to materialize the abstraction that, until then, related speakers could only guess and besides it comes into competition with individual languages. In modern centuries, the provision of grammars, dictionaries and other such learning tools and systematizing instruments strengthens the idea that, because of their normative character, languages can be learned through study. Mythical stories encourage the achievement of prescriptive rules and lead speakers to link emotions to their language. Therefore, the topics of reflection that we want to discuss in this volume are: Norms, Myths and Emotions related to language construction.

If, as we believe, the history of languages is the history of the construction of an ideal artefact that permits a specific interpretation of the linguistic reality and helps to approve and assimilate a certain zone of diversity, enabling the accumulation of collective historical knowledge and making us identify it with a social community and a territory, then it must be agreed that languages are extremely complex entities. The new linguistic diversity that cultural globalisation and recent population movements have installed in most traditional linguistic territories has probably put the ideology of the national language into a state of crisis and, as a consequence, has made the ancient, intrinsic diversity of all languages visible, at least to the extent that this is still possible. Nowadays, then, the old linguistic diversity of dialects, of parlances, of local lexicons and the cultural forms that are reflected in these, of varieties and previously unsuccessful linguistic entities has been given a new opportunity in a world where the cohesion of societies and the welfare of citizens must be guaranteed using all available means. Looked at this way, the intricacy of languages may even open up an opportunity for local economic and social development.

Antoni Ferrando, catedràtic de Filologia Catalana de la UV, s'ha jubilat el 2018, després de més de 40 anys de dedicació a la nostra Universitat, i ha estat nomenat professor emèrit. Després de la mort de Sanchis Guarner, amb qui treballà des dels inicis del Departament —aleshores de Lingüística Valenciana—, Ferrando en va ser el primer director, responsable de la formació de generacions de docents i d'altres professionals de la nostra llengua, i arribà a convertir-lo en un referent dins els estudis de la catalanística. Amb centenars de treballs publicats, ha anat construint una obra sòlida que, a hores d'ara, està lluny d'esgotar-se. Però la seua trajectòria no té només transcendència acadèmica sinó també social, en favor de la dignitat col·lectiva i l'anhelada normalitat cultural del País Valencià. Els companys que participen en aquest volum, molts dels quals han begut directament del seu mestratge, aporten amb la seua contribució un testimoni de gratitud.
