This book is a genealogy of some of the people who were residents of Dutch New Amsterdam, and other towns of New Netherlands, including Albany and Upstate New York, and New Jersey. Anneke Jans (b.1605-d.1663) was a famous woman in the early Dutch colony in New Netherland and in New Amsterdam. According to tradition, Anneke Jans was said to be descended from William I of Nassau, Prince of Orange, Stadtholder of the Netherlands, or Stadtholder of Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, and Friesland, (b.1533-k.1584). Not so well known as Anneke Jans, are a sister of Anneke Jans, named Marritje Jans, and also a man said to be a brother of Anneke Jans, named Jan Jansen. Added to these persons, in this book, are many additional conjectural brothers and sisters, conjectural brothers and sisters of the Jans family, added to the Jans family for reasons described in more detail within the book. In this book, the first section will list the marriages of Anneke Jans and Marritje Jans and Jan Jansen, and the conjectural brothers and sisters of the Jans family, and their children of those marriages, and the marriages of these children and some of their descendants for a few generations. In this book, the second section will describe a conjectural ancestry genealogy for Anneke Jans in connection to William I of Nassau, Prince of Orange, and list the paternal ancestral line of William I of Nassau, the Prince of Orange, and his younger brother Johann, with their paternal ancestry descending from the earliest known ancestor in that paternal line, in descent to the most recent ancestor of William I of Nassau, the Prince of Orange, and his younger brother Johann. The genealogy information in this book descendant list was initially derived from the (1996) book written by William Brower Bogardus, entitled, "Dear Cousin: A Charted Genealogy of the Descendants of Anneke Jans ... and of her sister Marritje Jans", however, the genealogy information in this earlier genealogy work is now greatly expanded in the present book. The genealogy information in this new book New Amsterdam genealogy descendant list is mostly derived from additional genealogy information obtained from internet sources. The internet sources used in the writing of this new book were mainly derived from internet sources which identified and referenced books which were compilations of Dutch Church records. These internet source referenced books are listed in the bibliography at the end of this book. The first generation listed in this new book were mostly born in the Netherlands, and some may have been born in Norway or Germany, and all later emigrated to the New Netherlands colony. The second generation listed in this book were generally born in the New Netherlands colony, mostly in New Amsterdam, later New York City, or in Long Island, or in the region of Albany, New York, or in New Jersey, although some of the second generation of the conjectural members of the Jans family also may have been born in the Netherlands of Northern Europe, and they later emigrated to the New Netherlands colony, either as children with their parents, or later as adults. The conjectural members of the Jans family are included in this book, as conjectural members of the Jans family, only by circumstantial evidence, in a general method described in more detail within the book. Descendant Family names include Banta, Bayard, Beekman, Bogardus, Cuyler, Decker, De Groot, Demarest, Depuy, Dewitt, Douw, Dumont, Fonda, Gardenier, Hopper, Kierstede, Kip, Lansing, Livingston, Loockermans, Meyer, Nevius, Quackenbosch, Roosa, Roosevelt, Rutgers, Schenck, Schoonmaker, Schuyler, Springsteen, Ten Broeck, Terhune, Van Breestede, Van Brugh, Van Buren, Van Couwenhoven, Van Deursen, Van Deusen, Van Horn, Van Ness, Van Pelt, Van Rensselaer, Van Voorhees, Van Zandt, Vreeland, Waldron, Wynkoop, and many others.

David Greenway, a journalist’s journalist in the tradition of Michael Herr, David Halberstam, and Dexter Filkins. In this vivid memoir, he tells us what it’s like to report a war up close. Reporter David Greenway was at the White House the day Kennedy was assassinated. He was in the jungles of Vietnam in that war’s most dangerous days, and left Saigon by helicopter from the American embassy as the city was falling. He was with Sean Flynn when Flynn decided to get an entire New Guinea village high on hash, and with him hours before he disappeared in Cambodia. He escorted John le Carre around South East Asia as he researched The Honourable Schoolboy. He was wounded in Vietnam and awarded a Bronze Star for rescuing a Marine. He was with Sidney Schanberg and Dith Pran in Phnom Penh before the city descended into the killing fields of the Khmer Rouge. Greenway covered Sadat in Jerusalem, civil war and bombing in Lebanon, ethnic cleansing and genocide the Balkans, the Gulf Wars (both), and reported from Afghanistan and Iraq as they collapsed into civil war. This is a great adventure story—the life of a war correspondent on the front lines for five decades, eye-witness to come of the most violent and heroic scenes in recent history.

There is no such thing as a small genealogical research project. Family histories, like precocious children, always challenge their authors with more and more questions. Paul C. Van Dyke discovered this fact when he wrote a genealogy of his branch of the Van Dyke family in the late 1950s. That project led Mr. Van Dyke to explore and research the whole history of the Van Dyke family in America. This excellent book, based on primary sources recounting the Dutch settlement of New Jersey, is the fruit of those years of research. It is fundamentally a Dutch-American history. Incorporating a wide variety of historical accounts, original documents and illustrations, Mr. Van Dyke has written a compelling and richly informative account of nine generations of Van Dykes and the nearly three centuries of American history that serve as a backdrop. Thomas Van Dyck of Amsterdam was the 16th-century patriarch whose story opens the book, and the author also includes helpful background information on Holland's golden age of exploration and the Dutch East India Company. Thomas' son, Jan Van Dyck, and his family immigrated to New Amsterdam in 1652, eventually settling in New Utrecht on Long Island. Jan Jansen Van Dyck was the third generation, and his son John Van Dyck participated in the large Dutch migration (c.1711) to the Millstone Valley in Middlesex and Somerset Counties in the prerevolutionary province of New Jersey. The subsequent generations of Van Dyck farmers in New Jersey were well-respected, patriotic members of such communities as New Brunswick, Princeton, Trenton, Ten Mile Run, Penns Neck, Rocky Hill, Harlingen, Griggstown, Bridgepoint, Kingston, Millstone, Somerville, Franklin, Montgomery and West Windsor. When they deemed the time appropriate, some of these hard-working and versatile Dutch broke with the farm tradition to enter upon various commercial occupations and the professions, as exemplified in the final chapter and appendices of the book. Every chapter opens with a genealogical note that provides vital statistics such as birth, marriage and death dates. The names of spouses and children are always included in the narrative accounts of the subjects. Numerous appendices furnish additional details, often through transcriptions of original wills, deeds, military records, etc. A bibliography and separate indices for subjects and surnames are included. In 1624 the Dutch West India Company established the colony of Brazil. Only thirty years later, the Dutch Republic handed over the colony to Portugal, never to return to the South Atlantic. Because Dutch Brazil was the first sustained Protestant colony in Iberian America, the events there became major news in early modern Europe and shaped a lively print culture. In Amsterdam's Atlantic, historian Michiel van Groesen shows how the rise and tumultuous fall of Dutch Brazil marked the emergence of a "public Atlantic" centered around Holland's capital city. Amsterdam served as Europe's main hub for news from the Atlantic world, and breaking reports out of Brazil generated great excitement in the city, which reverberated throughout the continent. Initially, the flow of information was successfully managed by the directors of the West India Company. However, when Portuguese sugar planters revolted against the Dutch regime, and tales of corruption among leading administrators in Brazil emerged, they lost their hold on the media landscape, and reports traveled more freely. Fueled by the powerful local print media, popular discussions about Brazil became so bitter that the Amsterdam authorities ultimately withdrew their support for the colony. The self-inflicted demise of Dutch Brazil has been regarded as an anomaly during an otherwise remarkably liberal period in Dutch history, and consequently generations of historians have neglected its significance. Amsterdam's Atlantic puts Dutch Brazil back on the front pages and argues that the way the Amsterdam media constructed Atlantic events was a key element in the transformation of public opinion in Europe.

"The Netherlands is home to one million citizens with roots in the former colonies Indonesia, Suriname and the Antilles. Entitlement to Dutch citizenship, pre-migration acculturation in Dutch language and culture as well as a strong rhetorical argument ('We are here because you were there') were strong assets of the first generation. This 'postcolonial bonus' indeed facilitated their integration. In the process, the initial distance to mainstream Dutch culture diminished. Postwar Dutch society went through serious transformations. Its once lily white population now includes two million non-Western migrants and the past decade witnessed heated debates about multiculturalism. The most important debates about the postcolonial migrant communities centeracknowledgmentgement and the inclusion of colonialism and its legacies in the national memorial culture. This resulted in state-sponsored gestures, ranging from financial compensation to monuments. The ensemble of such gestures reflect a guilt-ridden and inconsistent attempt to 'do justice' to the colonial past and to Dutch citizens with colonial roots. Postcolonial Netherlands is the first scholarly monograph to address these themes in an internationally comparative framework. Upon its publication in the Netherlands (2010) the book elicited much praise, but also serious objections to some of the author's theses, such as his prediction about the diminishing relevance of postcolonial roots"--Publisher's description.
