Der Roman "Sonntagskind" gibt Einblick in das Leben der "einfachen Leute" im Habsburgischen Böhmen des endenden 19. und des beginnenden 20. Jahrhunderts. Anhand des Schicksals der ältesten Tochter eines Schusters erfährt man über den Alltag von Frauen und Mädchen, über ihre verhinderte Bildung und Berufstätigkeit, über ihre Abhängigkeit von männlicher Macht und geltendem Gesetz. In Unwissenheit über die politischen Verhältnisse, die ihr Leben bestimmen, heiratet Franziska einen entfernten Verwandten, mit dem zusammen sie eine Bäckerei betreibt. Während des Ersten Weltkriegs werden Mann und Sohn eingezogen. Der Zweite Weltkrieg vertreibt sie aus ihrer Heimat. In einem Gegenentwurf wird der Lebenslauf ihrer Cousine geschildert, die in Wien lebt und von den modernen Errungenschaften der Epoche mehr profitiert als Franziska in der böhmischen Provinz. Im ersten Nachkriegsjahr treffen sich die beiden nunmehr alt gewordenen Frauen und erinnern sich an ihr vergangenes Leben.

Als Elsalill Jeß ein ganz kleines Mädchen war, hatte sie ein sonderbares Erlebnis. Jemand kam mitten in der Nacht und nahm ihr das Herz heraus. Er machte es auf wie die kleine goldene Kapsel, die sie um den Hals trug, und setzte ihr einen Cherub hinein. Wer das tat, konnte sie nicht sehen. Sie fühlte nur eine große, gute Hand. Am nächsten Tage saß Näh-Tine bei Deichgraf Jeß in der Kinderstube und flickte. »Ist in deinem Herzen ein Cherub?« fragte Elsalill. »Chotte dochen, das Kind!« Näh-Tine, die sehr klein war, hüpfte hoch auf ihrem Kinderstühlchen. Sie faßte an die oberste ihrer drei Mützen, die sie immer aufhatte seit der Sache mit der Fledermaus. Nein, von einem Cherub im Herzen hatte sie niemals gehört. Da wußte Elsalill, daß sie etwas ganz Besonderes hatte. Sie sagte zu niemanden ein Wort darüber. Der Cherub in ihrem Herzen war in seine Flügel eingeschlagen wie ein Schmetterling, den sie im Frühling aus der kleinen, glänzenden Puppe herauskriechen sah. Wenn er die unteren Flügel entfaltete, schien es Elsalill, als ob sie zu ihren Schultern herauswüchsen. Dann lief sie so schnell, als flöge sie in ihre Heimat. Die oberen hatte er noch nie entfaltet. Manchmal zitterten sie, dann wuchs Elsalills Herz, daß es ihr fast weh tat. Sie mußte die Hand darauf drücken. Wenn Frau Jeß ihre kleine Tochter dann gerade ansah, gab sie ihr jedesmal einen Kuß.
