The Will To Change The Child written by Jeroen J. H. Dekker and has been published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Education categories.

This book is about the will to change children and how a new phenomenon arose in 19th century Europe - the re-education home. It describes the founders of these homes, of which thousands were established, the children who lived there, their parents (who were considered bad or incompetent educators), and the re-education that took place in these homes. It describes also the role of religion, private philanthropy and the government, child welfare legislation, and child science. «By ceaselessly observing their behaviour and character, by correcting the bad habits, weaknesses and impulses they exhibit, and by developing and reinforcing the positive properties and characteristics they possess», so founders of one of these homes described their will to change the child. From the perspective of enlightened philanthropy, which was based on optimistic views on the child and mankind, change meant betterment. To Evangelical philanthropists, who held pessimistic views on the child and mankind based on the dogma of original sin, change meant atonement and salvation. In child pathology - the science developed at the end of the nineteenth century which studied problem children - change meant diagnostics and therapy.

The Relevance Of Education written by Jerome Bruner and has been published by W. W. Norton & Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1971-01-17 with Education categories.

"Education is in a state of crisis. It has failed to respond to changing social needs—lagging behind rather than leading." The crisis that Jerome Bruner identifies in this volume admits of no easy solutions. But the noted American psychologist makes clear that educational reform must begin with the understanding of how a child acquires information and converts knowledge into action. Drawing on his current work on infant development, Bruner underscores the importance of formulating educational strategies that expand rather than constrict the skills of the young learner. Since education takes place under conditions imposed by a technological society, Professor Bruner maintains that it is not enough to attempt reform through minor curriculum revisions. The program that fails to set knowledge within the context of action must be replaced. And to be truly relevant to our social needs, the scope of education must be extended toward overcoming the severe handicaps faced by children from impoverished areas.

The importance of early childhood education has been emphasized by a large body of research that has demonstrated that children’s cognitive and socio-emotional development is significantly influenced by the quality of the education and care received from their families and in preschool. Consequently, it is important to investigate factors that pertain to the provision of a high-quality education and high-quality care for young children. This book addresses several important issues that are currently under discussion with respect to this topic. In particular, the book focuses on three topics presently under debate: the professionalization of pedagogues working in the field of early childhood education; the quality of education and care provided by families and preschools; and the promotion of children from socio-economically disadvantaged families. Providing an excellent overview of current research in Germany, this book will be useful to readers who are interested in international perspectives on early childhood education and who want to gain insight into relevant topics discussed in other countries. This book was originally published as a special issue of Early Child Development and Care.

Family School Links written by Alan Booth and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-31 with Psychology categories.

Based on the presentations and discussions from a national symposium on family-school links held at the Pennsylvania State University, this volume brings together psychologists, sociologists, educators, and policymakers studying the bidirectional effects between schools and families. This topic -- the links between families and schools, and how these affect children's educational achievement -- encompasses a host of questions, each of key social and educational significance. * How far does parental involvement in schools affect children's experiences and achievement at school? * What explains the great differences between schools, families, and communities in the extent of such involvement? * Are these differences a matter of school practices, or do they reflect much broader social and cultural divisions? * What is the nature of the impact schools have on children and their families? * How can family-school-partnerships be fostered in a way that helps children? The chapter authors consider these questions and related issues, present different perspectives, highlight various aspects of the issues, and suggest widely differing answers. This volume's goal is to provide the reader with current information on what is known about family-school-community links, and to provoke new ways of thinking about these links and their implications for children's education and well-being.
