An unlikely touring party of five friends embark on a road trip to deliver a brand new Cadillac, from Switzerland to the Sudan. All five are attached to the U.N. in Geneva, and all five are more than they claim to be. Among the travellers are Kalash el Khatar, a seven-foot-tall Muslim prince; British intelligence agent Nigel Collins and his beautiful half-English, half-Hungarian girlfriend Ilona Bentley; Paul Christopher; and Tadeusz Miernik, a shy and bumbling Polish scientist who just might also be the leader of a terrorist cell that could set the Cold War alight. Related as a collection of intelligence reports, wire taps, surveillance notes, and conversation transcripts written and recorded by the five characters, the novel reveals a complicated web in which each character spins his or her own deception. From the elegance and refinement of political intrigue in Geneva, to the palaces and terrorist camps of Dar es Salaam, The Miernik Dossier moves through a world of the subtlest plots and the most brutal acts of violence.

This lavishly illustrated book takes readers into the world of ancient Olympia and the modern Olympic Games. Filled with photographs, drawings, and maps, this book explores the natural environment of the sanctuary and the important political and cultural role it played. Archaeological discoveries give a fascinating picture of an ancient Olympia whose legacy of peaceful competition and athletic excellence lives on. The first modern Olympic Games were held in 1896 and, since then, the number of nations competing has grown from 14 to more than 200. In addition to numerous illustrations, this book includes fascinating essays that offer a global perspective on the phenomenon that the Olympic Games have become and trace its evolution from a great idea to a grand spectacle. With hundreds of photographs and illustrations, it looks at aspects of the Games from the first Winter Olympic Games in 1924 to the highly politically charged Olympics in Berlin in 1936; from doping scandals to the growth of the Paralympics. Interspersed with the illustrations are fascinating essays that gather the latest information, records, and research making this one of the most comprehensive and up-to-date books on the topic.

Today cities of the Arab world are subject to many of the same problems as other world cities, yet too often they are ignored in studies of urbanisation. This collection reveals the contrasts and similarities between older, traditional Arab cities and the newer oil-stimulated cities of the Gulf in their search for development and a place in the world order. The eight cities which form the core of the book – Rabat, Amman, Beirut, Kuwait, Manama, Doha, Abu Dhabi and Riyadh – provide a unique insight into today’s Middle Eastern city. Winner of The International Planning History Society (IPHS) Book Prize.

The first history of indigenous photography in the Middle East The birth of photography coincided with the expansion of European imperialism in the Middle East, and some of the medium's earliest images are Orientalist pictures taken by Europeans in such places as Cairo and Jerusalem—photographs that have long shaped and distorted the Western visual imagination of the region. But the Middle East had many of its own photographers, collectors, and patrons. In this book, Stephen Sheehi presents a groundbreaking new account of early photography in the Arab world. The Arab Imago concentrates primarily on studio portraits by Arab and Armenian photographers in the late Ottoman Empire. Examining previously known studios such as Abdullah Frères, Pascal Sébah, Garabed Krikorian, and Khalil Raad, the book also provides the first account of other pioneers such as Georges and Louis Saboungi, the Kova Brothers, Muhammad Sadiq Bey, and Ibrahim Rif'at Pasha—as well as the first detailed look at early photographs of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. In addition, the book explores indigenous photography manuals and albums, newspapers, scientific journals, and fiction. Featuring extensive previously unpublished images, The Arab Imago shows how native photography played an essential role in the creation of modern Arab societies in Egypt, Palestine, Syria, and Lebanon before the First World War. At the same time, the book overturns Eurocentric and Orientalist understandings of indigenous photography and challenges previous histories of the medium.
