Właścicielka sławnej warszawskiej pensji, pani Latter, jest kobietą niezależną. Miała dwóch mężów, jeden z nich zmarł, drugi również uchodzi za zmarłego, choć losy jego owiane są tajemnicą. Jedną z jej pomocnic jest pracująca jako „dama klasowa”dziewiętnastoletnia Madzia Brzeska, którą cechuje dobroć serca, naiwność oraz... zdumiewająco niska samoocena. Zmagania tych bohaterek z życiem, z otaczającą rzeczywistością stanowią temat powieści Emancypantki Bolesława Prusa.Oprócz tych dwóch głównych postaci, przez karty powieści przewija się cały korowód kobiet rozmaicie ustosunkowujących się do nowoczesnej wówczas idei emancypacji, jednolicie natomiast cechujących się hiperemocjonalnością lub wręcz skłonnością do histerii, jak np. emancypantka w stylu brytyjskim, panna Howard. Z powieści, której akcja osadzona została w latach 70. XIX w., drukowanej w latach 90. (w odcinkach w „Kurierze Codziennym” w 1890 r., wyd. całości w 1894 r.), nie dowiemy się o tym, czym istotnie był wówczas ruch na rzecz wyzwolenia kobiet w Polsce – w tym celu lepiej sięgnąć po teksty Żmichowskiej (np. opracowane przez Boy'a listy). Dowiemy się natomiast wiele o potocznych opiniach, funkcjonowaniu plotki oraz obowiązujących obyczajach. Ukazana przez Prusa rzeczywistość społeczna, w której funkcjonowały kobiety, niezależnie od zamierzeń autora robi wstrząsające wrażenie.Powieść o emancypacji kobiet w sposób zadziwiający przeistoczyła się pod piórem pozytywistycznego pisarza w powieść o pieniądzach: o kredycie, kapitale, zyskach i kosztach, materialnych podstawach bytu, o ekonomii zakreślającej horyzont aspiracji.
