Molecular chaperones are involved in a wide variety of essential cellular processes in living cells. A subset of molecular chaperones have been initially described as heat shock proteins protecting cells from stress damage by keeping cellular proteins in a folding competent state and preventing them from irreversible aggregation. Later it became obvious that molecular chaperones are also expressed constitutively in the cell and are involved in complex processes such as protein synthesis, intracellular protein transport, post-translational modification and secretion of proteins as well as receptor signalling. Hence, it is not surprising that molecular chaperones are implicated in the pathogenesis of many relevant diseases and could be regarded as potential pharmacological targets. Starting with the analysis of the mode of action of chaperones at the molecular, cellular and organismic level, this book will then describe specific aspects where modulation of chaperone action could be of pharmacological and therapeutic interest.

Quantum Information Processing is a young and rapidly growing field of research at the intersection of physics, mathematics, and computer science. It thus covers all current concepts in quantum computing, both theoretical and experimental, before moving on to the latest implementations of quantum computing and communication protocols. Dagmar Bruß graduated at RWTH University Aachen, Germany, and received her PhD in theoretical particle physics from the University of Heidelberg in 1994. As a research fellow at the University of Oxford she started to work in quantum information theory. Another fellowship at ISI Torino, Italy, followed. While being a research assistant at the University of Hannover she completed her habilitation. Since 2004 Professor Bruß has been holding a chair at the Institute of Theoretical Physics at the Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf, Germany. Gerd Leuchs studied physics and mathematics at the University of Cologne, Germany, and received his Ph.D. in 1978. After two research visits at the University of Colorado in Boulder, USA, he headed the German gravitational wave detection group from 1985 to 1989. He became technical director at Nanomach AG in Switzerland. Since 1994 Professor Leuchs has been holding the chair for optics at the Friedrich-Alexander-University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany. His fields of research span the range from modern aspects of classical optics to quantum optics and quantum information. Since 2003 he has been Director of the Max Planck Research Group for Optics, Information and Photonics at Erlangen.

The aroma characteristics of aged smoke and its residue have not been characterized. In this study, “ashtray aroma” was analyzed using gas chromatography olfactometry (GC-O) combined with aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA) of ashtray solvent extracts and static headspace analysis of ashtrays. A total of 33 odor-active regions were detected in the headspace and a total of 56 odor-active regions with flavor dilution (FD) factors≥32 were detected in the solvent extract. In addition, the ashtray aroma was assessed descriptively by a trained volunteer panel.
