There is no hard evidence to tell us when Franky Russo''s young mind turned toward the decision to select a career in the funeral business, or if he actually even consciously made the decision to pursue that livelihood. Perhaps he was groomed for that position by unknown forces. In any case, Franky''s dreams came true, and along with the dreams came the nightmares of an unexplainable existence on this earth. The characters and stories in this book represent nothing less than human desperation-an attempt to create some sort reasonable rationalization for what really happened. Still, some things cannot be explained, only detailed. What happened to Franky during his career in the funeral industry is something that most people would not wish on their worst enemy. One may finish this book with a myriad of emotions, such as laughing hysterically or crying like a baby and in the end with shivers running up and down their spine. The irony of this book is that it has a way of showing how one deals with the everyday frustrations of the embalmer/funeral director, although I don''t think Franky ever really accomplished that.

Dr. Bethany Witt wasn't well liked, but Dr. Tara Ross was sure nobody wanted her colleague dead. That is until Tara finds the young woman embalmed and posed in the Barn, an annex of her office once used for embalming 100 years ago. It's a slam-dunk case when Troopers arrest Bethany's ill-tempered ex-boyfriend, a local funeral home employee, based on forensics linking him to the crime scene. Although it looks bad for Bethany's ex, Tara and her fiancé, NYPD Captain Jeffrey Corrigan, aren't convinced he's the right guy and search for another possible killer. Their investigation takes a twisted turn when Brewster Medical Center's CEO suffers the same gruesome fate. With Bethany's ex-boyfriend jailed, homicide investigator, Ty Marchinski, insists a copycat killer did in the CEO, dismissing Jeffrey's theory that the murders are related. Neither murders in his jurisdiction, Jeffrey has no choice but to heed to Ty's request to back off the case. However, Tara persists in her own investigation, determined to find The Embalmer. After she disappears, Jeffrey is back in the game, racing Ty to find the woman he loves before The Embalmer silences her.

""Alternately clever, humorous, lively, sad, and charming, her book is recommended for both public and academic libraries with large women's collections."--Library Journal"Burroway, author of Cutting Stone and six other novels, is a pithy essayist with an inner compass that steers her to the ambiguity at the heart of the human condition."--Booklist"Sightline Books is an exciting and welcome promise of all the excellent nonfiction writing just waiting to come into view."--Vivian Gornick, author of The Situation and the Story: The Art of Personal Narrative"These gathered-together autobiographical essays reveal a fascinating, honest, witty writer I thought I had known (briefly) thirty years ago. I am delighted to discover, in this charming memoir, that I was woefully ignorant of her extraordinary life. Now I feel privileged to learn of it in such an elegantly written fashion."--Doris Grumbach"The most lively, witty, uncensored celebration of the life of a writer, woman, lover, wife, mother, stepmother against the history of her time--and what a time it was and is! No 'futile cry of ME!' but bold and brilliant portraits of where we have been and where we are headed. Brava Burroway!o--Julia MarkusPast Praise for Janet Burroway"She writes like a robust Angel."--London Guardian on Raw Silk"A fine and complex novel, a comedy and then some."--New Yorker on Opening Nights" . . . a novel of rare and lustrous quality."--Newsweek on Raw Silk"What sets Raw Silk apart is Janet Burroway's superb stylistic gifts."--New York Times Book Review"Miss Burroway's gifts are those of a fine, intuitive actress . . . one of those rare, accomplished stylists whose art lies in the air of effortlessness, or near invisibility."--New Statesman on The Buzzards"For people like me, these essays on life are instructive. Their titles reveal their central themes, but Burroway feels confident and free to range wide from the main trunk, looping out into her life and her metaphors, then back again, probing through and confessing all because, for the real writer who has come so far, it seems now there is no point in not."--Fourth GenreJanet Burroway followed in the footsteps of Sylvia Plath. Like Plath, she was an early Mademoiselle guest editor in New York, an Ivy League and Cambridge student, an aspiring poet-playwright-novelist in the period before feminism existed, a woman who struggled with her generation's conflicting demands of work and love. Unlike Plath, Janet Burroway survived. In sixteen essays of wit, rage, and reconciliation, Embalming Mom chronicles loss and renaissance in a life that reaches from Florida to Arizona across to England and home again. Burroway brilliantly weaves her way through the dangers of daily life--divorcing her first husband, raising two boys, establishing a new life, scattering her mother's ashes and sorting the meager possessions of her father. Each new danger and challenge highlight the tenacious will of the body and spirit to heal."Ordinary life is more dangerous than war because nobody survives," Burroway contemplates in the essay "Danger and Domesticity," yet each of her meditations reminds us that it's our daily rituals and trials that truly keep us alive.Janet Burroway is the author of plays, poetry, children's books, and seven novels, including The Buzzards, Raw Silk, Opening Nights, and Cutting Stone. Her textbook Writing Fiction, now in its fifth edition, is used in more than three hundred colleges and universities in the United States; a further text, Imaginative Writing, is due out in 2002. She is Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professor at Florida State University in Tallahassee."

In New England Nightmares: True Tales of the Strange and Gothic, author Keven McQueen explores the darker and stranger side of New England and the Mid-Atlantic. With shocking and unforgettable tales from the tip of Maine all the way to the New Jersey shore, this eerie collection explores our fascination with death and the unknown, including tales of medical students digging up bodies to dissect, of a murderer's bones being wired together after death, and of Dr. Timothy Clark Smith, who requested that he be buried with a breathing tube and glass window so he could see the outside world. An intriguing and frightful look into the odder side of the Northeast, New England Nightmares promises to send chills down your spine.

THE EMBALMER IS DYING TO DATE YOU. QUESTION IS, ARE YOU WILLING TO DIE FOR A DATE WITH HIM TOO? You might think that a guy with the name of Steve Jobz would be one lucky man. That he'd be rich and have the world at his fingertips. But instead, Jobz (which is short for Jobzynski) is barely making ends meet at the New York State Department of Unemployment Insurance Fraud. A former cop who was forced to retire early after shooting a young man during a convenience store holdup, Jobz has since resigned himself to wasting away his days in a four-by-four cubicle inside an office space that's more boring than watching the paint dry. However, when his overbearing boss and best friend calls him in on a job that the Albany Police Department is heading up, Jobz has a chance to get out of the office for a while. But what he doesn't realize is that he's about to come face to face with a serial killer who embalms his victims alive. What he is also about to face down, is his own worst nightmare come true when that serial killer turns out not to be a stranger. The Embalmer culminates with an explosive climax and promises to keep readers glued to their chairs for hours. The first-in-series novel combines horror with some serious hard-boiled action, adventure, and romance. For fans of Michael Connelly, Robert B. Parker, Charlie Huston, Jim Crumley, Lee Child, Brett Battles, and more. Scroll up and grab a copy of The Embalmer today. Then binge the entire series. Death In A Consumer Culture written by Susan Dobscha and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-12-22 with Business & Economics categories.

Death has never been more visible to consumers. From life insurance to burial plots to estate planning, we are constantly reminded of consumer choices to be made with our mortality in mind. Religious beliefs in the afterlife (or their absence) impact everyday consumption activities. Death in a Consumer Culture presents the broadest array of research on the topic of death and consumer behaviour across disciplinary boundaries. Organised into five sections covering: The Death Industry; Death Rituals; Death and Consumption; Death and the Body; and Alternate Endings, the book explores topics from celebrity death tourism, pet and online memorialization; family history research, to alternatives to traditional corpse disposal methods and patient-assisted suicide. Work from scholars in history, religious studies, sociology, psychology, anthropology, and cultural studies sits alongside research in marketing and consumer culture. From eastern and western perspectives, spanning social groups and demographic categories, all explore the ubiquity of death as a physical, emotional, cultural, social, and cosmological inevitability. Offering a richly unique anthology on this challenging topic, this book will be of interest to researchers working at the intersections of consumer culture, marketing and mortality.
