Das 17. Jahrhundert war für die spanische Literatur auch das Goldene Zeitalter der Übersetzungen. Durch fremdsprachliche Übertragungen beeinflußte insbesondere der Schelmenroman nachhaltig die Romanentwicklung in Europa. Aus dem Umfeld dieser literarischen Modegattung der Zeit stammt Francisco López de Ubedas »Libro de entretenimiento de la Pícara Justina« (1605), der als Begründer des "weiblichen" Schelmenromans gilt. Der umfangreiche Roman zählt zu den enigmatischsten Werken der spanischen Literaturgeschichte und wurde bisher weitgehend von literaturwissenschaftlicher Seite vernachlässigt. In Abgrenzung von den bekannten Etikettierungen der »Pícara Justina« als höfischer Schlüsselroman oder als mißglückte novela picaresca wird eine Neuinterpretation vorgenommen: Unter Verwendung des Instrumentariums der Intertextualität erscheint López de Ubedas Roman als Vertreter der literarischen Karnevaleske (Bachtin), der sich diskursparodistisch mit prominenten Textsorten, Erkenntnismodellen und dem barocken conceptismo auseinandersetzt. Von den zeitgenössischen Übertragungen werden die italienische Version und die englische Adaption unter eingehender Berücksichtigung des literarischen Übersetzungshintergrunds als frühe Rezeptionsdokumente analysiert. In kulturhistorischer Perspektive können die Translatoren Barezzo Barezzi und John Stevens als wirkungsgeschichtlich herausragende Vermittler der spanischen Literatur im Ausland gewürdigt und literatursoziologische Überlegungen zum Zielpublikum ihrer Publikationen angestellt werden.
