Embracing Race written by Michele S. Moses and has been published by Teachers College Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002 with Education categories.

With clarity, passion, and creativity, Michele Moses offers a new and promising lens for viewing the unsolved issues of race and education. In this book, Moses provides a comprehensive examination of four major race-conscious educational policies: bilingual education, multicultural curricula, affirmative action, and remedial education. She argues, convincingly, that such policies are critical to fostering self-determination and personal autonomy in students who will otherwise be left with a deficient education. Presenting a strong, theoretically grounded case for race-conscious educational policies, this volume offers a new framework for examining the complex interaction between race, education, opportunities, and justice. Some of the important questions addressed in this volume include: -- What must the educational system do to promote social justice for students of color and poor students? -- What is required to help these students to develop self-determination? -- How will race-conscious educational policies help to provide a fair education for all students?

Developing Cultural Humility offers a unique look into the journeys of psychologists striving towards an integration of multiculturalism in their personal and professional lives. Contributing authors—representing a mix of “cultural backgrounds” but stereotypically identified as “White”—engage in thoughtful dialogue with psychologists from underrepresented communities who are identified as established and respected individuals within the multicultural field. The contributing authors discuss both the challenges and rewards they experienced in their own journeys and how they continue to engage in the process of staying connected to their cultural identity and to being culturally responsive. In addition, psychologists who represent historically disenfranchised communities have similarly reflected on their own journey, while offering commentary to the personal stories of White psychologists. This text is useful for stimulating discussions about privilege, power, and the impact race has on either bringing people together or creating more distance, whether intentionally or unintentionally. It demonstrates to readers how to engage in the process of examining one’s own “culture” in more intentional ways, and discusses the implications as we move towards engaging in more dialogue around multicultural issues.

In Developing Cultural Humility: Embracing Race, Privilege, and Power, Editor Miguel Gallardo invites a group of psychologists who represent various cultural backgrounds but identify as "White" to share their individual journeys toward recognizing, understanding, and embracing their unique cultural identities and experiences. Contributing authors discuss the challenges and triumphs involved in the pursuit of integration of multicultural and social justice concerns in their personal and professional lives. They share how they remain engaged in the continual practice of self-discovery while remaining culturally responsive and humble. Each chapter centers on a journey of self-discovery by a White psychologist with a reflective commentary from a BIPOC psychologist. The commentaries give voice to the personal journeys of individuals from historically dehumanized communities and also offer them the opportunity to react to and comment on the stories of White psychologists. Together, the chapters provide a model for pushing discussions, re-centering dialogues, and building stronger, more respectful relationships. An exemplary resource to stimulate meaningful dialogue about race, privilege, power, and intentional self-reflection, Developing Cultural Humility is well suited for graduate-level courses in psychology, especially those with emphasis on multiculturalism and culturally responsive practice. Check out the accompanying video! Hosted by Alexander Street, a ProQuest Company, the Developing Cultural Humility: Understanding How to Engage in Difficult Dialogues video demonstrates how to generate more authentic and genuine multicultural conversations and relationships. Reading Picture Books With Children written by Megan Dowd Lambert and has been published by Charlesbridge Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-11-03 with Education categories.

A new, interactive approach to storytime, The Whole Book Approach was developed in conjunction with the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art and expert author Megan Dowd Lambert's graduate work in children's literature at Simmons College, offering a practical guide for reshaping storytime and getting kids to think with their eyes. Traditional storytime often offers a passive experience for kids, but the Whole Book approach asks the youngest of readers to ponder all aspects of a picture book and to use their critical thinking skills. Using classic examples, Megan asks kids to think about why the trim size of Ludwig Bemelman's Madeline is so generous, or why the typeset in David Wiesner's Caldecott winner,The Three Pigs, appears to twist around the page, or why books like Chris Van Allsburg's The Polar Express and Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar are printed landscape instead of portrait. The dynamic discussions that result from this shared reading style range from the profound to the hilarious and will inspire adults to make children's responses to text, art, and design an essential part of storytime.

More Beautiful And More Terrible written by Imani Perry and has been published by NYU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-02-28 with Law categories.

Perry argues that racism in America has moved into a new phase--post-intentional For a nation that often optimistically claims to be post-racial, we are still mired in the practices of racial inequality that plays out in law, policy, and in our local communities. One of two explanations is often given for this persistent phenomenon: On the one hand, we might be hypocritical—saying one thing, and doing or believing another; on the other, it might have little to do with us individually but rather be inherent to the structure of American society. More Beautiful and More Terrible compels us to think beyond this insufficient dichotomy in order to see how racial inequality is perpetuated. Imani Perry asserts that the U.S. is in a new and distinct phase of racism that is “post-intentional”: neither based on the intentional discrimination of the past, nor drawing upon biological concepts of race. Drawing upon the insights and tools of critical race theory, social policy, law, sociology and cultural studies, she demonstrates how post-intentional racism works and maintains that it cannot be addressed solely through the kinds of structural solutions of the Left or the values arguments of the Right. Rather, the author identifies a place in the middle—a space of “righteous hope”—and articulates a notion of ethics and human agency that will allow us to expand and amplify that hope. To paraphrase James Baldwin, when talking about race, it is both more terrible than most think, but also more beautiful than most can imagine, with limitless and open-ended possibility. Perry leads readers down the path of imagining the possible and points to the way forward.
