This research is concerned with how farmers' knowledge networks are socially developed, in order to facilitate the development of a conceptual model focusing on the generation and transfer of technology. The conceptual bakground is that farmers' knowledge, goals and objectives should be integrated into a participatory model for the development of an agricultural knowledge information system (AKIS). In order to develop this research focus, two communities of Brazilian beef farmers belonging to different eco-regions were selected as the target social groups. Further, the National Centre for Beef Cattle Research (CNPGC-EMBRAPA) is the linked regional agency for the development of applied technology for beef. The objectives of this research are: (a) to investigate how farmers' information flows are socially developed, in relation to farm decision-marking; (b) to identify and describe the structure of beef farmers' information systems; (c) to analyse relationships between "farmer" knowledge and CNPGC-EMBRAPA's technologies; (d) to develop a methodological learning approach in order to assess farmers' information demands and to imporove the process of generating and transfering technology. In order to examine the above research issues, a combination of survey (questionaire) and case studeis (in-depth interview) was applied to elicit data from a stratified random sample of the farmer population. Six groups of farmers were identified through application of multivariate analysis (factor and cluster) on selected set of ir formation and social variables. In-depth interviews (qualitative data) were carried out with one representative farmer from each group and four nominated "trusted persons", in order to obtain deeper insights into the social construction of the farmers' information network, and to access additional data to permit a more comprehensive testing of the research hypotheses. This research has indicated that each group of farmers develops its own information system. The social construction of the farmers develops its own information system. The social construction of the farmers' develops its own information system. The social construction of the farmers' information networks presents some common characteristics, but each farmer builds the network on the basis of his/her values, beliefs, education, time preferences, and intensity of using the available sources of information; however, this is always marked by the presence of a "trusted person". Informal communication is preferred among farmers rather than reading to obtain information. The participation of CNPGC-EMBRAPA in the farmers' information networks has been peripheral. Although the farmers are using some of the developed technologies, the more advanced and wealthy farmers are taking advantage of the overal technologies. A participatory conceptual framework, both o link the technological innovation to the majority of farmers' needs and, at same the time, to increase the institutional efficiency, is proposed.

Around the 19th century, the planet was home to the first billion people, thus initiating the population explosion in Europe. At the beginning of the 20th century, famine had set in in European cities and rural production at that time had to make a huge effort, but the expansion of agricultural areas brought strong pressure on areas of native vegetation. In 1930 the planet reached two billion people, in 1960 three billion and according to UN assumptions in 2050 we should reach 10 billion. Humanity must be able to feed, at minimum standards and sustainably, the growing population, which according to the UN will reach 10 billion people in a few decades; and meet the sophistication of food demand because of rising average household incomes in most countries. Thus, there will be a pressure of demand influencing the destinations of agriculture. In the food demand scenario where per capita income growth will be exponential, leading to a decrease in the population s nutritional deficiencies and changes in consumption habits, increasing the demand for animal proteins. And to feed the population estimated by the UN in 2050 there will be a strong technological intensification in the field. Thus, understanding the processes related to beef or milk livestock production, on pasture or in confinement, becomes very important. In addition to knowing the production chain, it is necessary to know the technologies present in each process and how they can help to increase the profitability of the farm, with better management of resources. Also, the arrival of new technologies requires highly skilled labor and even properties that do not adapt or adopt current and/or new technologies, unfortunately, little by little they left the market. Adhering to current technologies, from integrated systems such as Integrated Crop-Livestock-Forest, genetic improvement, animal welfare, combating diseases and upcoming technologies will be vital for the permanence of the property s activities on the market.

Raising your beef, the right way and getting more meat in less time is the desire of every rancher. Thus, we know that beef animals are bovine breeds that have genetic characteristics suitable for slaughter to produce meat and derivatives. Figure 1. Nelore cattle are the most used in beef cattle in Brazil. Source: Embrapa. In Brazil, raising beef cattle represents one of the main economic activities. The country has the largest herd in the world and the activity is profitable and a considerable source of income. Additionally, beef produced in Brazil is highly appreciated both domestically and abroad. However, to be successful in raising beef cattle, it is necessary to use appropriate techniques to obtain quality products in less time and provide profitability to the rancher. This care ranges from the structure of the property, choice of breed of the animal, handling of the animals, feeding and administration of the property. In this document we will discuss the appropriate techniques to be successful in raising beef cattle.

The global population is expected to reach 10 billion people in the next 30 years. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, an additional 52 million tons of nitrogen fertilizers and 165 million ha of new agricultural land will be needed to meet the demand for food, feed, fiber, and biofuels by 2050. These variations correspond to a 50% increase in fertilizer use and 6% increase in agricultural land compared to 2012. The simultaneous need for more fertilizers and land is explained not only by regional differences in the endowment of production factors, technology and inequalities in income and land tenure. Inefficiencies and incorrect expenditures in the supply processes are responsible for significant losses of resources. Post-harvest production losses were estimated at 1.3 billion tons per year. In addition, 17 trillion tons of topsoil are lost every year worldwide, resulting in economic costs of up to US$8 billion. Erosion leads to land abandonment and degradation. Globally, 1 billion hectares of arable land are abandoned or degraded. Inefficient agricultural management and the growing demand for food have promoted a standard sectoral expansion, with severe environmental impacts. Agricultural expansion is recognized as a driver of deforestation in tropical regions around the world. Brazil, Indonesia, Republic of Congo, Colombia, Laos, and Mozambique have lost 50 million ha of forests since 2001. In addition to biodiversity losses and socio-economic impacts on the local population, deforestation results in the depreciation of ecosystem services needed for agriculture. Climate stability, soil fertility, water availability and quality, pollination and biological pest control are essential conditions to ensure agricultural productivity.
