This study contextualizes Ralph Waldo Emerson's application and appreciation of Confucian motifs and quotations in his journals, sermons, lectures, and publications from 1830-1843, and argues against the majority of published investigations into Emerson's Oriental interests. The majority of scholarly investigations into Emerson's Oriental interests, from the late nineteenth century to the early twenty-first century, consider Emerson's application of Confucian motifs and quotations to be aesthetic tropes or rhetorical devices without any philosophical influence upon Emerson's early writings (1830-1843). Conversely, this dissertation advances Emerson's holistic and rather cosmopolitan integration of motifs from numerous world sages with his own philosophical and spiritual views, which includes Confucian motifs, prior to his seminal work Nature (1836), his famous speeches "The American Scholar" (1837) and "The Divinity School Address" (1838), and his Essays: First Series (1841). Emerson first read a translation of Confucius in 1830 and he noted motifs and direct quotations from the Chinese Sage in his journals; those motifs ended up in Emerson's sermons, lectures, and essays from 1832 onward. To date, Emerson's sermons have not been referenced by scholarly publications concerned with Emerson's Oriental motifs, and no scholarship has argued for the presence of Confucian motifs in Nature. Therefore, this study applies empirical textual evidence to contradict the dismissal and/or marginalization of the presence of Confucian motifs in Emerson's works prior to 1843. The majority of scholars tend to address the presence and influence of Hindu texts and philosophy in Emerson's work and allot approximately ten pages of discussion on Hindu motifs to every one page on Confucius or Chinese motifs. Such disparity in analysis and investigation of Emerson's interests reflects cultural attitudes toward Confucius and China, which became associated with Emerson due to his public praise of Confucius, as articles from magazines and newspapers of the eighteenth and early-nineteenth century in this current investigation illustrate. Undoubtedly, this dissertation benefits from access to modern research tools, such as, internet searches, electronic archives, and newspaper/magazine databases, which have produced previously unexplored sources that speak to the importance of Confucian motifs and Confucian quotations in the early writings (1830-1843) of Ralph Waldo Emerson.

In this highly original work, Mathew A. Foust breaks new ground in comparative studies through his exploration of the connections between Confucianism and the American Transcendentalist and Pragmatist movements. In his examination of a broad range of philosophers, including Confucius, Mencius, Xunzi, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Charles Peirce, William James, and Josiah Royce, Foust traces direct lines of influence from early translations of Confucian texts and brings to light conceptual affinities that have been previously overlooked. Combining resources from both traditions, Confucianism and American Philosophy offers fresh insights into contemporary problems and exemplifies the potential of cross-cultural dialogue in an increasingly pluralistic world.

“Succeeds in making Emerson’s ideas and recommended spiritual practices accessible. . . . [For] those interested in nineteenth-century American spiritualism.” —Publishers Weekly Even during his lifetime, Ralph Waldo Emerson was called the Sage of Concord, a fitting title for this leader of the American Transcendentalist movement. Everything that Emerson said and wrote directly addressed the conduct of life, and in his view, spiritual truth and understanding were the essence of religion. Unsurprisingly, he sought to rescue spirituality from decay, eschewing dry preaching and rote rituals. Unitarian minister Barry M. Andrews has spent years studying Emerson, finding wisdom and guidance in his teachings and practices, and witnessing how the spiritual lives of others are enriched when they grasp the many meanings in his work. In American Sage, Andrews explores Emerson's writings, including his journals and letters, and makes them accessible to today's spiritual seekers. Written in everyday language and based on scholarship grounded in historical detail, this enlightening book considers the nineteenth-century religious and intellectual crosscurrents that shaped Emerson's worldview to reveal how his spiritual teachings remain timeless and modern, universal and uniquely American. “An ideal companion for readers working through Emerson's essays, a reading group on spirituality, and any number of classroom situations.” —David M. Robinson, author of Emerson and the Conduct of Life: Pragmatism and Ethical Purpose in the Later Work “In a style that is both scholarly and highly readable, Andrews offers an insightful account of Emerson's teachings. . . . demonstrating how his ideas are relevant to readers of today who are poised between faith and unbelief.” —Phyllis Cole, author of Mary Moody Emerson and the Origins of Transcendentalism: A Family History

The first collection of Emerson"s spiritual writings, published for the 200th anniversary of the writer"s birth Matthew Arnold once described Ralph Waldo Emerson as "the friend and aider of all those who would live in the spirit." Arnold"s comment captured the impact that Emerson had as a teacher of a new form of spirituality in the nineteenth century. Emerson proposed a new religious vision that made the spiritual life freshly accessible to people. In our current era, Emerson continues to speak with a compelling voice. Known best in the twenty-first century as a literary innovator and early architect of American intellectual culture, Emerson"s writings still offer spiritual sustenance to the thoughtful reader. The Spiritual Emerson brings together the essays and lectures that best articulate Emerson"s spiritual vision, and promise the greatest relevance to today"s reader. Compiled and introduced by David M. Robinson, one of the leading authorities on Emerson, The Spiritual Emerson will be both a portrait of Emerson as a spiritual teacher and a sourcebook for all those who find his ideas and convictions useful in their own efforts to live in the spirit. "This collection brings together for the first time Emerson's most important writings on spiritual themes, along with a discerning and eminently readable introduction by one of the foremost authorities on Emerson's religious thought." --Lawrence Buell, Harvard University, author of LITERARY TRANSCENDENTALISM and EMERSON "Simply the best selection ever made from the spiritual writings of America"s most influential sage. Combining familiar essays with the oft-neglected, from both the early and the later Emerson, Robinson reveals the paradoxes that shaped one soul then and continue to shape many today. For all who still care for the soul, essential reading." --John Buehrens, author of UNDERSTANDING THE BIBLE "THE SPIRITUAL EMERSON is a superb and timely collection, one that will help to elucidate and consolidate our understanding of Emerson's spirituality on the occasion of his 200th birthday celebration. Accessibly framed and introduced by David Robinson, our premier scholar of the religious context and character of Emersonian Transcendentalism, this elegantly appointed volume will help open the way to a fuller understanding of the heart of Emerson's thought. Drawn together chronologically from every period of Emerson's long and productive career, the essays contained here provide a sound basis for a better understanding of the life-long evolution of his religious and moral philosophy." --Alan Hodder, Hampshire College "David Robinson is our leading interpreter of the later Emerson's pragmatic turn toward an 'ever greater conviction that ethical action [is] not a by-product of religious belief, but the very core of religion itself.' Robinson has for years been calling attention to Emerson as a religious figure, not just a literary or philosophical one. Now he has, in THE SPIRITUAL EMERSON, provided us with a guided anthology that takes the reader through Emerson's own spiritual evolution. Robinson's Emerson is an urgent seeker, outspoken, socially committed and publically responsible. Robinson's Emerson is a person we can--and should-- be learning from. Robinson is persuasive in his belief that Emersonianism is--especially now--a live option for us." --Robert D. Richardson, author of Henry Thoreau: A Life of the Mind and Emerson: The Mind on Fire David M. Robinson is a leading authority on Emerson and the New England transcendentalist movement. He is the author of numerous books, including Emerson and the Conduct of Life, The Unitarians and the Universalists, and Apostle of Culture: Emerson as Preacher and Lecturer. He is Oregon Professor of English and head of the American studies program at Oregon State University, in Corvallis.
