The novel was a huge commercial success and helped establish Zola''s fame and reputation throughout France and the world.About the Author: mile-douard-Charles-Antoine Zola (1840-1902) was a journalist, a novelist, a playwright, and a political activist. He was one of the most influential French novelists of the 19th century and the founder of the literary and theatrical school of naturalism. Zola was a major figure in the political liberalization of France.During his youth in the south of France, Zola befriended Paul Czanne, his schoolmate and future renowned Post-Impressionist painter-best known for his incredibly varied painting style that influenced 20th century abstract art.Zola''s first book, Contes Ninon (Stories for Ninon), was a collection of short stories dedicated to his imaginary childhood love, Ninon. He published his debut novel in 1865, La Confession de Claude, an autobiographical work that chronicled a man falling in love with a sex worker. The book drew the attention of the public as well as of the police, and it was banned in the social circles, causing Zola to lose his job.Zola went on to write Thrse Raquin (1867), his first major novel, which delves into intrigue, adultery, and murder; and the dark love story Madeleine Frat (1868), his last novel before he started his masterful Rougon-Macquart 20-novel series.mile Zola''s works include novels, dramas, poetry, and criticism, among which is his famous Les Rougon-Macquart (1871-1893), a cycle of twenty novels which depict various aspects of life and society, such as The Fortune of the Rougons (La Fortune des Rougon) originally published in 1871 and the first novel of the series; The Rush For The Spoil (La Cure), in 1872; The Conquest of Plassans (La Conqute de Plassans), in 1874; The Assommoir - The Prelude to Nana (L''Assommoir), in 1877, the seventh novel of the series, about the suffering of the Parisian working-class; Nana (1880), the ninth installment, which deals with prostitution; Piping Hot! (Pot-Bouille), in 1882, the tenth novel of the cycle and Zola''s most sarcastic satire, which describes daily life in a newly constructed block of flats in late nineteenth-century Paris; The Ladies Paradise (1883), the eleventh novel (original title: Au Bonheur des Dames), which focuses on Octave Mouret, who, in Piping Hot!, meets Caroline Hdouin, the owner of a small silk shop; Germinal (1885), the thirteenth novel in the series, which depicts the mining industry and is considered by some as his masterpiece; and The Soil (La Terre), in 1887-all published by Adeptio Editions.Zola''s open letter to French president Flix Faure, under the headline J''Accuse...!, published on the front page of the newspaper L''Aurore on January 13, 1898, charging various French officials with a "miscarriage of justice," reopened the case of the Jewish army officer, Captain Alfred Dreyfus, who had been sentenced to Devil''s Island. For that, Zola was himself sentenced to a year in prison but fled to England, returning one year later after Dreyfus'' name had been cleared. Dreyfus was reinstated as an officer and decorated with the Legion of Honor.

Emile Zola is perhaps the most important, and certainly one of the most controversial, writers of 19th century French literature. Zola dramatically shaped the course of literature through the development of naturalism, characterized by the unsentimental and realistic portrayal of class in French society. His twenty novel cycle "Les Rougon-Macquart" is epic in scope, often drawing comparisons to the prolific output of Balzac. Here in the fourth installment of that epic collection we find "The Conquest of Plassans," which centers on the fictional Provencal town of Plassans. The generally pleasant lives of the townspeople are disrupted when the strange and sinister cleric Abbe Faujas comes to town. As the story unravels it becomes evident that the cleric has arrived to try and win influence in the town for outside political forces. Through a series of intrigues, plots, slanders and insinuations, Faujas begins to unravel the otherwise harmonious community. No family is more impacted by the cleric's machinations than that of Francois Mouret. The suppressed English edition of "The Conquest of Plassans" first published in the late 19th century by Henry Vizetelly is presented here in this volume.

The Conquest of Plassans, part of the series of Rougon-Macquart. The Rougon family, in Zola's narrative, rises to fortune, and the town of Plassans bows down before its power. But time passes, the revolt of the clergy supervenes, by their influence the town chooses a Royalist Marquis as deputy, and it becomes necessary to conquer it once again.Abbé Faujas, by whom this conquest is achieved on behalf of the Empire, is a strongly conceived character, perhaps the most real of all the priests that are scattered through Zola's books. No other priestly creation of Zola's pen vie with the stern, chaste, authoritative, ambitious Faujas, the man who subdues Plassans, and who wrecks the home of the Mouret family, with whom he lives. The book largely deals with the matter of 'the priest in the house, ' and towards the end of the volume Mouret, the husband who has been driven mad and shut up in a lunatic asylum, returns home and wreaks the most terrible vengeance upon those who have wronged him.The pages which deal with the madman's escape and his horrible revenge are certainly among the most powerful that M. Zola has ever written, and have been commended for their effectiveness by several of his leading critics.

Zola (1840-1902) was a French novelist, playwright and journalist, and the best-known practitioner of the literary school of naturalism. He was nominated for the first and second Nobel Prize in Literature in 1901 and 1902. More than half of Zola's novels were part of a set of 20 known collectively as Les Rougon-Macquart, examining two branches of a family - the respectable Rougons and the disreputable Macquarts - over five generations. This novel, the 4th in the series first published in the original French in 1874, is in many ways a sequel to the first novel in the cycle, The Fortune of the Rougons (1871), and is again centred on the fictional Provencal town of Plassans. The plot revolves around a sinister cleric's attempt at political intrique with disastrous consequences for some of the townsfolk. Reprinted from a 1917 edition of Ernest A Vizetelly's authorised English translation which first appeared in 1901.
