"The right thing and the easy thing are rarely the same." The mighty Calidian Empire is teetering on the brink; whether it is the brink of downfall or the brink of unprecedented stability depends upon one man. This burden falls upon the reluctant young Duke Macien of Jorbus, who has the mantle of Dictator thrust upon him by the ill Emperor. He inherits a political mess, and at a dangerous time for those who sit on the throne. The Empire is in the midst of it's largest conflict in history, and the open war with it's rival Homitha has taken a toll on the lands and the people within it's borders. Enemies are everywhere, both outside and inside the gates. The controversial war has been put on hiatus, just when Calidia had started to get the upper hand. At home, assassins lurk in the shadows and political conspiracies are bubbling up from the cracks. The Empire is divided and a civil war now appears imminent. With faltering support and growing resentment, Macien may have to do some previously unthinkable things to keep Calidia from crumbling. Even if he does succeed in doing so, he still needs to keep the Empire from being seized by a tyrannical political foe who will take drastic measures to claim the throne he feels is his by right. Macien begins to understand that the right thing and the easy thing are rarely the same. A high profile murder in the capital city sends a jaded detective and his new partner headlong into a political conspiracy. A boy and his two friends dream of joining the mighty Imperial Legions, and they set out to do so despite the risk. A member of the Imperial Guard is tangled into a web of deceit and not sure whom he can trust after thwarting an assassination attempt in the Imperial Palace. An outcast Sentinel, who happens to be half Calidian and half Homithan, must protect an Empire and a people that don't accept him. A young and talented cavalry officer will rise to the challenge of the coming conflict, and carve out his place in the long history of the Legions. In the midst of it all is Macien. Perhaps there is a reason why that is. Exotic locales, mythical beings, rich characters, military adventure, Prophecy, intrigue, suspense, twists and turns, and all taking place in a world that echoes our own ancient one...

"This is unlike any recent work I know of. It offers a challenging, often refreshing, and what will certainly be a controversial assessment of classical Athenian democracy and its significance to modern America. Samons is willing to tread where few other classicists are willing to go in print. He reminds readers that the Athenian democracy offers just as many negative lessons as positive ones, and topics like the popular vote, the dangers of state payments to individual citizens, the naturally acquisitive foreign policy of democratic governments, and the place of religion in democracy all come up for discussion and criticism. Samons has written an original and very provocative book."—James Sickinger, author of Public Records and Archives in Classical Athens "Professor Samons' lively and challenging account of ancient Athens raises important questions about democracy, ancient and modern. It will surely arouse keen interest and debate."—Donald Kagan, author of The Peloponnesian War "In this elegantly written, carefully researched, and perceptive book, Samons presents a penetrating analysis of ancient Athenian democracy's dark sides. His book is as much about the errors and weaknesses of our own political system as it is about those of ancient Athens. Whether or not we agree with his critique and conclusions, this book is not merely thought-provoking: it is annoyingly discomforting, forcing us to re-examine firm beliefs and to discard easy solutions."—Kurt A. Raaflaub, author of Discovery of Freedom in Ancient Greece "In this marvelously unfashionable book, Samons debunks much of what passes in the current-day academy as scholarship on classical Athens, demonstrating that it is an ideologically-driven apology for a radically defective form of government. In the process, he casts light on the perspicacity of America's founding fathers and on the unthinking populism that threatens in our own day to ruin their legacy."—Paul A. Rahe, author of Republics Ancient and Modern: Classical Republicanism and the American Revolution "We are in the greatest age of democracy since antiquity and in the most need of guidance about the wisdom of government by majority vote. Precisely for that reason Professor Samons offers a bold and unbridled look at the nature and history of democracies, ancient and modern. He reminds us that we are capable of doing as much evil as good when constitutional protections and republican oversight are not there to moderate the instant desires of the majority. This is an engaging, provocative, and timely study of ancient Athens and modern America that should serve as a cautionary reminder to both romantic scholars and zealous diplomats."—Victor Davis Hanson, author of The Other Greeks

In a provocative study on comparative empire, noted historians identify periods of transition across history that reveal how and why empires emerge. Loren J. Samons on Athens and Arthur Eckstein on Rome examine classical Western empires. Nicholas Canny discusses the British experience, Paul Bushkovitch analyzes the case of imperial Russia, and Pamela Kyle Crossley studies Qing China's beginnings. Frank Ninkovich tackles the actions of the United States at the turn of the twentieth century, which many view as imperial behavior. What were the critical characteristics that distinguished the imperial period of the state from its pre-imperial period? When did the state develop those characteristics sufficiently to be called an empire? The authors indicate the domestic political, social, economic, or military institutions that made empire formation possible and address how intentional the transition to empire was. They investigate the actions that drove imperial consolidation and consider the international environment in which the empire formed. Kimberly Kagan provides a concluding essay that probes the historical cases for insights into policymaking and the nature of imperial power.

This book presents a unique rethinking of G. W. F. Hegel's philosophy from unusual and controversial perspectives in order to liberate new energies from his philosophy. The role Hegel ascribes to women in the shaping of society and family, the reconstruction of his anthropological and psychological perspective, his approach to human nature, the relationship between mental illness and social disease, the role of the unconscious, and the relevance of intercultural and interreligious pathways: All these themes reveal new and inspiring aspects of Hegel’s thought for our time.
