IFC Lessons of Experience Series No. 5. The project experience accumulated by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) provides a basis for analyzing the way in which the investment framework has changed over time in developing countries and the implications for the success and efficiency of foreign direct investment (FDI) ventures. This report discusses the growth of FDI in the world economy and its role in emerging markets, describes the role of IFC in providing policy advice related to FDI (and the IFC's experience as an investor alongside FDI in developing countries), and draws lessons for how to structure FDI projects and policies to attract such investments. Annexes present and describe global FDI flows, FDI projects involving IFC investment and FIAS advisory assignments, and FDI projects examined in preparing this study. Single mothers in Gweru are among the most vulnerable to poverty and disease. The GWAPA project is an attempt to rescue them from this predicament. This study established that most of the GWAPA projects which started well were suffocating under the current (2000-2010) economic hardships. Main challenges faced by GWAPA include the political and economic environment, HIV/AIDS, limited educational levels among GWAPA members, limited access to resources, community cultural biases and negative attitudes towards single mothers and commercial sex workers, government regulation on financial transactions and work overload among members. The Zimbabwean government and municipalities are encouraged to invest more in the small enterprise sector as it has proven to have the capability to create employment and develop communities by mobilizing the grassroots. The study also recommends a more detailed and deeper participatory study, related comparative studies that show differences and similarities between related projects in different areas in Zimbabwe, and similar studies on DNGOs that work with both sexes in different areas in Zimbabwe.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Politics - Region: Africa, grade: "70", University of KwaZulu-Natal, language: English, abstract: Economic reform has become one of the major necessities of post-colonial African states, given years of slavery, apartheid, colonialism and underdevelopment. Many scholars have argued that Africa’s lack of development is due to the lack of African participation within the economic sphere, especially as a business class or ‘bourgeoisie’. They contend that African participation in business has been rare, and where granted it has been mostly within the peripheries or petty commerce. This study will investigate Zimbabwe’s IBDC with a view to going some way to answering the major question that arises out of this argument: is creating a nationalist indigenous entrepreneurial class the answer to Africa’s development problems? The focus of this study will be on the emergence of the IBDC as a vehicle for black empowerment. It will attempt to account for its successes, its failures, and its ultimate demise. The research will also chart how some of Zimbabwe's most successful black entrepreneurs, some who have managed to establish a global presence, got their start with this organization, and how they proceeded when the IBDC ceased to exist. The study will also proceed to examine the Indigenous Business Women's Organization and the Affirmative Action Group, similar organisations that came after the IBDC. Crucial within this research agenda is the interrogation of the role of the state in post colonial Africa: can it be a catalyst for economic empowerment, or is it an inhibitor? Finally, efforts will be made to investigate the complementarities and contradictions of efforts to create a black business class with poverty alleviation policies.

"The Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) sector has been receiving increased global attention from governments, researchers and management practitioners in both developed and developing nations as a vehicle for economic growth. The Zimbabwean SME sector has been on record as minimising the impact of the economic challenges on the economy thus proving the strategic role played by the SME sector in improving economic growth. Therefore, the Zimbabwean government has high hopes of resuscitating the economy through empowering the SME sector. However, the sector is inundated by challenges that have retarded its effectiveness in achieving the government's expectations. Some key limitations and challenges include short life span of the SMEs, entrenchment of archaic business practices, lack of financial capitalisation and the failure to adopt a supply chain perspective of business. Although several solutions to the problem have been proposed and implemented, one solution that has not been fully tested relates to how people-centred knowledge management systems (KMSs) can be harnessed to improve the performance of SME supply chains in Zimbabwe. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between people-centred KMSs, knowledge sharing and supply chain performance (SCP) in the Zimbabwean SME sector." --

Today Africa reports high levels of unemployment among other social issues causing governments,Äô instability and low economic growth. Brain drain, low gross domestic product (GDP) per capita and growth reported across the continent requires an initiative on driving entrepreneurship development. The study seeks to investigate the determinants of small to medium enterprises (SMEs) growth in developing countries with a special focus on Zimbabwe. Informed by literature, the Zimbabwe Finscope Business Consumer Survey (2012) data was used to run a linear programming model regression analysis on the factors influencing SMEs profitability in that country. The study found that number of business units, education level, business type, family run businesses, expertise, licenced, advertising and bank account were significant in influencing SMEs profitability. The results will assist policymakers, development partners, entrepreneurs and other stakeholders. The insight can also be useful to venture capitalists, investment banks, investors and other financiers. There is need to support the millions of SMEs and future entrepreneurs in improving the regulatory and business environment, improving institutional support systems, promoting technology transfers, innovations and improving productivity.
