This text aims to help professionals empower children so that they can contribute to the decisions which affect them as individuals and as a group; at unit, local and national levels. The manual helps to ensure success by providing a training tool for both professionals and young people. The manual examines: the importance of empowerment to children and young people; the benefits of empowerment to children and professionals alike; the barriers to empowerment; and the need for workers and organizations to understand their own intentions before embarking on moves towards promoting children and young people's involvement in decision-making.

Empowering Children is especially designed for field practitioners seeking ways to encourage young people—particularly the marginalized—to become more involved in changing their circumstances. Through dozens of exercises and lessons, the book presents a variety of practical methods for engaging children in the development process—from assessments to evaluations. Discussions on issues such as personal empowerment, self-esteem, problem analysis, and child protection can equip leaders to help children serve as agents of change who understand how valuable they are. The book concludes with preparations for a community child participation plan. From a Christian perspective, the realization that all children have dignity and are created in the image of God helps us to see that every child's input is valuable. The Bible's concepts of community, church, and mission further help us to see that God not only uses kids in his wonderful plan, but that he also wants all of his children—male, female, young, and old—to participate in his work in the world.

Empowering Children written by R. Brian Howe and has been published by University of Toronto Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-06-09 with Social Science categories.

Approved by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1989, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child affirms that children in all countries have fundamental rights, including rights to education. To date, 192 states are signatories to or have in some form ratified the accord. Children are still imperilled in many countries, however, and are often not made aware of their guaranteed rights. In Empowering Children, R. Brian Howe and Katherine Covell assert that educating children about their basic rights is a necessary means not only of fulfilling a country's legal obligations, but also of advancing education about democratic principles and the practice of citizenship. The authors contend that children's rights education empowers children as persons and as rights-respecting citizens in democratic societies. Such education has a 'contagion effect' that brings about a general social knowledge on human rights and social responsibility. Although there remain obstacles to the implementation of children's rights in many countries, Howe and Covell argue that reforming schools and enhancing teacher education are absolutely essential to the creation of a new culture of respect toward children as citizens. Their thorough and passionate work marks a significant advance in the field.

In today’s society kids hardly get to enjoy their childhood, as they are faced with mounting pressures at school, within their family, and among their peers. Children are overexposed to violence and deprived of lessons on self-love and inner peace . . . but imagine a world where they are given tools to speak their truth, follow their hearts, and above all believe in themselves. You see, deep inside every one of us is a light that shines brightly when we are aligned with our higher self—our absolute best self. When we allow fear to drive our action, we dim that light within. Yet when we believe in ourselves, speak our truth, and do what feels right in our hearts, we ignite the light and become the best possible version of ourselves. Whether you are a parent, a teacher, a child-care worker, or just a person who would like to leave this world a little more peaceful than you found it, this book will give you the tools to educate, enlighten, and empower our children to see that they are perfect just as they are. Ignite the Light is a practical step-by-step manual for change that provides tools from which all children—and all families—will benefit.
