Excerpt from Spicilegium Floræ Maroccanæ The earliest notice that I have found of botanical research into the Marocco Flora is in the Istoria Botanica' of Zanoni (cura tor Of the Botanic Garden at Bologna), published in 1675. He had received plants and seeds from Tangier from a Mr. Alexander Balaam, who appears to have been a merchant trading with Tangier during some part of the time when that town was held by the Portuguese and the English. The next contribution, and amore considerable one, is contained in a list published (1696) in the 19th vol. Of the Philosophical Transactions (p. 239 et seq), but drawn up in 1673 by Mr. Spotswood, a surgeon who lived there during the English occupation, and gathered plants which he gave to the same Mr. Balaam and to Dr. Morison at Oxford There is some difficulty in identifying many of the species named; and I have not thought it worth while to cite the plants contained in Mr. Spotswood's list. MAURICE KEEN Orders of lay knights - the most famous of which are those of the Garter and the Golden Fleece - were founded at some time between 1325 and 1470 in almost every kingdom of Western Christendom, and played an important part in the life of the court. Jonathan Boulton defines the "monarchical" orders as those with corporate statutes which attached the presidential office to the crown of the princely founder, or made it hereditary in his house. Modelled eitherdirectly or indirectly on the fictional society of the Round Table, they incorporated varying numbers of elements borrowed from the older religious orders of knighthood and from contemporary institutions. This study explores the nature and history of thirteen orders, and reveals them as not only an ingenious supplement to (or replacement for) the feudo-vassalic ties that still bound the leading members of the nobility to their sovereign, but also as the most important institutional embodiments of the secular ideals of chivalry that were at the heart of the international court culture of the age. The emergence of landscape ecology during the 1980s represents an impor tant maturation of ecological theory. Once enamored with the conceptual beauty of well-balanced, homogeneous ecosystems, ecologists now assert that much of the essence of ecological systems lies in their lumpiness. Patches with differing properties and behaviors lie strewn across the land scape, products of the complex interactions of climate, disturbance, and biotic processes. It is the collective behavior of this patchwork of eco systems that drives pattern and process of the landscape. is not an end point This realization of the importance of patch dynamics in itself, however. Rather, it is a passage to a new conceptual framework, the internal workings of which remain obscure. The next tier of questions includes: What are the fundamental pieces that compose a landscape? How are these pieces bounded? To what extent do these boundaries influence communication and interaction among patches of the landscape? Will con sideration of the interactions among landscape elements help us to under stand the workings of landscapes? At the core of these questions lies the notion of the ecotone, a term with a lineage that even predates ecosystem. Late in the nineteenth century, F. E. Clements realized that the transition zones between plant communi ties had properties distinct from either of the adjacent communities. Not until the emergence of patch dynamics theory, however, has central signif icance of the ecotone concept become apparent.
