"This is the first paperback edition of the only English-language translation of the Haitian scholar Antnor Firmin's The Equality of the Human Races, a foundational text in critical anthropology first published in 1885 when anthropology was just emerging as a specialized field of study. Marginalized for its ""radical"" position that the human races were equal, Firmin's lucid and persuasive treatise was decades ahead of its time. Arguing that the equality of the races could be demonstrated through a positivist scientific approach, Firmin challenged racist writings and the dominant views of the day. Translated by Asselin Charles and framed by Carolyn Fluehr-Lobban's substantial introduction, this rediscovered text is an important contribution to contemporary scholarship in anthropology, pan-African studies, and colonial and postcolonial studies."

This work was the first modern attempt to prove that race is the primary force determining world events and history. Working with the limited scientific data available at the time of writing (1853), Arthur de Gobineau divided humans into three major groupings, white, yellow and black. He argues that the cause of the downfall of civilizations is always racial mixing, and that every civilization has either been directly controlled by what he called "Aryans" or has had a significant Aryan element mixed in it. He also argues that climate and environment have no bearing on racial characteristics. This book was a cornerstone work for 20th century racial theory, and is of immense importance for this reason alone. This new edition has been completely reset and contains all the original text.

Excerpt from The Inequality of Human Races Under the stress of the present misfortunes, we frequently hear that all our previous opinions need revision, that we have to forget many things and to learn afresh still more, that we must try to build up our civilization on a safer basis, that we must reconsider and te-construct the values received from former ages. It is therefore our duty, I think, to turn back to those prophets who accused our forefathers of being on the road to destruction, all the more SO as these prophets were likewise true poets who tried as such to point out the right road, endeavouring to remedy, as far as their insight went, the evil of their time. This is the best, and I trust a perfectly Satisfactory, reason for the translation of The Inequality of Human Races. Not illustrated. 1915 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XVI RECAPITULATION; THE RESPECTIVE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE THREE GREAT RACES; THE SUPERIORITY OF THE WHITE TYPE, AND, WITHIN THIS TYPE, OF THE ARYAN FAMILY I Have shown the unique place in the organic world occupied by the human species, the profound physical, as well as moral, differences separating it from all other kinds of living creatures. Considering it by itself, I have been able to distinguish, on physiological grounds alone, three great and clearly marked types, the black, the yellow, and the white. However uncertain the aims of physiology may be, however meagre its resources, however defective its methods, it can proceed thus far with absolute certainty. Jhg rigger! variety is the lowest, and stands at the foot of the . ladder. The animal character, that appears in the shape of the' pelvis, is stamped on the negro from birth, and foreshadows his destiny. His intellect will always move within a very narrow circle. He is not however a mere brute, for behind his low receding brow, in the middle of his skull, we can see signs of a powerful energy, however crude its objects. If his mental faculties are dull or even non-existent, he often has an intensity of desire, and so of will, which may be called terrible. Many of:: his senses, especially taste and smell, are developed to an extent unknown to the other two races.* --' The very strength of his sensations is the most striking proof of his inferiority. All food is good in his eyes, nothing disgusts or repels him. What he desires is to eat, to eat furiously, and to excess; no carrion is too revolting to be swallowed by him. It ! * "Taste and smell in the negro are as powerful as they are undiscriminating. He eats everything, and odours which are revolting to us are pleasant...

This book provides an interdisciplinary look at racism and science, investigating the biological and social realities of individual and group differences. The contributors examine race and racial distinctions, environmental versus genetic contributions to IQ and to cognitive skill level, the impact of biocultural interactions on behavior, and the problems of achieving an objective appraisal of inter- and intragroup differences in humans. They also consider a possible model for cultural and biological evolution, recommending a careful selection of models and methods of approach for sciences concerned with the study of man. The book includes recent findings in the area of race and IQ, documents instances of racism and classism, and analyzes factors underlying these phenomena.
