O livro que o leitor tem em mãos é resultado de uma agenda de pesquisa dedicada a examinar os principais beneficiários do regime ditatorial militar implantado no Brasil em 1964. É curioso que quando se anuncia o propósito de investigar os que enriqueceram naquele período muitos leitores busquem denúncias de enriquecimento ilícito e corrupção, e quase nunca a criação de fortunas como resultado da acumulação capitalista facilitada por um regime de exceção. Essa última dinâmica é o que interessa essa agenda sintetizada em Empresariado e ditadura no Brasil, que reúne um conjunto de trabalhos de investigação sobre as relações favoráveis à acumulação criadas por um regime que além de reprimir, prender e assassinar opositores políticos, implementou reformas no Estado brasileiro e uma arquitetura legislativa que garantiu altas taxas de lucratividade para o grande capital. Eis uma dimensão essencial sem a qual não é possível compreender como parte considerável do empresariado brasileiro não só apoiou aquele regime como patrocinou e se comprometeu com estratégias sanguinárias de combate à oposição, como foi o caso notório da Operação Bandeirantes em São Paulo, para ficar num exemplo. Sem situar esse ponto, pode-se cair em leituras psicologizantes, que pouco esclarecem a questão. Não que aqueles tempos não tenham sido de corrupção, como comumente apelam os assassinos da memória encastelados nos quartéis, nas redes sociais e no Planalto. Mas o assunto aqui são as estratégias com as quais os donos do dinheiro formaram fortunas faraônicas num ambiente de aumento exponencial das taxas de exploração da classe trabalhadora e na abertura de novas fronteiras para o capitalismo. Nesse sentido, o debate aqui apresentado destoa profundamente de tendências apologéticas que ganharam repercussão importante no campo de estudos sobre a última ditadura e que, por exemplo, buscaram reconstruir positivamente o período do chamado 'milagre econômico'.

In recent decades there has been an exponential increase in large hydroelectric plants in Brazil, especially in the Amazon region. These large hydraulic structures impact the environment and the lives of people living in the places where they settle and require a special type of water governance. The dictatorial regime (1964-1985) created a "standard" for the construction of these great structures, through an institutional and legal framework, which benefited the Brazilian business elite but also, through the creation of a popular imagination, which shows itself lasting progress on the country's progress and development. The suspension of security, the fragility of institutional environmental structures, the disrespect for indigenous reserves, the lack of clarity about the concept of "affected population" and the non-payment of fair compensation were identified as one of the main challenges for a democratic water governance in the country. In the late 1970s, the Dam-Affected Movement (MAB) began its organization and is also studied in this research. The study is an important and insightful academic contribution to the understanding of the main bottlenecks of effective water governance in Brazil.

In Brazilian Propaganda, Nina Schneider examines the various modes of official, and unofficial, propaganda used by an authoritarian regime. Such propaganda is commonly believed to be political, praising military figures and openly legitimizing state repression. However, Brazil's military dictatorship (1964-1985) launched seemingly apolitical official campaigns that were aesthetically appealing and ostensibly aimed to "enlighten" and "civilize." Some were produced as civilian-military collaborations and others were conducted by privately owned media, but undergirding them all was the theme of a country aspiring to become a developed nation. Focusing primarily on visual media, Schneider demonstrates how many short films of the period portrayed a society free from class and racial conflicts. These films espoused civic-mindedness while attempting to distract from atrocities perpetuated by the regime. Mining a rich trove of materials from the National Archives in Rio and conducting interviews with key propagandists, Schneider demonstrates the ambiguities of twentieth-century Brazilian propaganda. She also challenges the notion of a homogeneous military regime in Brazil, highlighting its fractures and competing forces. By analyzing the strategy, production, mechanisms, and meaning of these films and reconstructing their effects, she provides an alternative interpretation of the propagandists' intentions and a new framework for understanding this era in Brazil's history.

How a group of intellectuals and policymakers transformed development economics and gave Latin America a new position in the world. After the Second World War demolished the old order, a group of economists and policymakers from across Latin America imagined a new global economy and launched an intellectual movement that would eventually capture the world. They charged that the systems of trade and finance that bound the world’s nations together were frustrating the economic prospects of Latin America and other regions of the world. Through the UN Economic Commission for Latin America, or CEPAL, the Spanish and Portuguese acronym, cepalinos challenged the orthodoxies of development theory and policy. Simultaneously, they demanded more not less trade, more not less aid, and offered a development agenda to transform both the developed and the developing world. Eventually, cepalinos established their own form of hegemony, outpacing the United States and the International Monetary Fund as the agenda setters for a region traditionally held under the orbit of Washington and its institutions. By doing so, cepalinos reshaped both regional and international governance and set an intellectual agenda that still resonates today. Drawing on unexplored sources from the Americas and Europe, Margarita Fajardo retells the history of dependency theory, revealing the diversity of an often-oversimplified movement and the fraught relationship between cepalinos, their dependentista critics, and the regional and global Left. By examining the political ventures of dependentistas and cepalinos, The World That Latin America Created is a story of ideas that brought about real change.
