Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2005 im Fachbereich Musik - Sonstiges, Note: 1, Universität Wien (Philologisch-Kulturwissenschaftliche Fakultät, Institut für Musikwissenschaft), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Claude Debussy (1862–1918) komponierte die Petite Suite im Laufe des Jahres 1888; es handelt sich also um ein Frühwerk. Am ersten März 1889 spielte Debussy diese zum ersten Mal im privaten Rahmen: In einem Pariser Salon führte er sie gemeinsam mit Jacques Durand, dem Sohn des Verlegers Durand auf, der sie bereits im Februar 1889 verlegt hatte. Der Titel „Suite“ ist typisch für die Vorliebe des jungen Debussys, weil er gerne Tänze frei aneinander reihte und angeblich dadurch die Sonatenhauptsatzform – wegen ihrer komplizierten Durchführungen – mied. Allgemein lässt sich bei den französischen Komponisten nach 1880 die Tendenz zu einer „Renaissance“ des 17. Jahrhundert erkennen. Diese Rückbesinnung auf alte, schlichte Formen steht im Gegensatz zur Gefühlsübersteigerung und Überfrachtung der Musik Wagners. Interessanterweise bezeichnet Debussy den ersten Satz dennoch mit einem außermusikalischen Titel En bateau („Im Boot“) wie nach Art eines romantischen Charakterstücks. War das Stück ursprünglich noch fünfsätzig konzipiert, so verzichtete er auf den mittleren Satz; und so stehen nun also: En bateau, Cortège, Menuet, und Ballet. Erst nach Debussys kompositorischem Durchbruch mit Pelléas et Mélisande (1892-1902) erfreute sich die Petite Suite immer größerer Beliebtheit und wurde schließlich mehrfach für unterschiedliche Besetzungen bearbeitet und transkribiert. Die berühmteste Orchesterfassung stammt von Henri Büsser.

Claude Debussy's Petite Suite was composed between 1886 and 1889 after a commission by Durand for piano music for skilled amateurs. It was first performed in 1889 by Debussy and Durand together. The four movements transcribed in this full score are: En Bateau, Cortege, Menuet and Ballet. I have always loved this piece because of its lush melodies, sheer exuberance and timeless quality. It has been transcribed for many orchestral and chamber groups in the past, but I felt it lent itself especially well to guitar trio. I made this arrangement to bring it to a modern generation of skilled amateurs, this time on acoustic guitar. TAB is provided to help with note placement. This is a new, digitally enhanced reprint of the score originally published in 1908 by A. Durand et Fils, Paris. The "Petite Suite" was originally composed by Debussy in 1889 for piano, four-hands. By the time an orchestral version was sought in 1907, the composer was too busy with numerous other commissions to orchestrate his youthful work and entrusted the job to the conductor and composer Henri Busser. This is the orchestral version most widely performed and recorded today.
