La repentina desaparición de un carismático intelectual palestino cristiano emigrado a Bagdad en 1948 es el detonante de este relato faulkneriano con clave política. Como miembro de una organización comprometida en la lucha armada contra Israel, surgen sospechas de que ha pasado a la clandestinidad. Su coche es hallado en la frontera de Siria y en su interior una cinta de casete que contiene una larga y explosiva confesión. A partir de ella, el autor construye ingeniosamente la narración, dividida en doce secciones en la que los amigos de Walid, tratando de descubrir su paradero, desgranarán, analizarán y reconstruirán la verdad de sus vidas. A través de este coro de voces, Yabra reclama el derecho a la autonomía individual del ciudadano árabe dentro de la sociedad tradicional y el derecho a la diferencia, fusionando la lucha por la vida y la lucha por la liberación de su pueblo. Esta es una novela acerca del compromiso político, de las percepciones erróneas entre la civilización occidental y la islámica y del paisaje personal como configurador de la cultura. Una novela, por otra parte, que tiene tanto de autobiográfico como tienen de ficción sus dos autobiografías, según el testimonio del propio autor. En español, junto a esta obra, han sido traducidas El primer pozo (memorias de infancia) para Ediciones del oriente y del mediterráneo y Cazadores en una calle angosta (novela) para Huerga y Fierro.
