Este estudio explora los modelos y sentidos del cuerpo asimilados en Colombia entre 1830 y 1990 y la relación entre conocimientos, ejercicio del poder, representación social y construcción de la experiencia. La investigación identifica varios modelos corporales que guiaron una educación del cuerpo vinculada a los principios de la ciudadanía, el liberalismo y los estilos de vida capitalistas. El libro expone un amplio conjunto de imágenes, prácticas y acciones sociales enfocadas en el cuerpo como recurso central para la socialización y educación de los colombianos como nacionales, ciudadanos, mujeres, obreros y hombres, niños y jóvenes modernos. Este proceso se rastrea en las prácticas concebidas para construir la identidad individual y nacional en la familia, la escuela, la ciudad, las formas de autorregulación, el mercado y el consumo o la vida emocional. Los discursos y prácticas de la urbanidad, la higiene y la educación física apalancaron a lo largo del siglo XIX el proyecto de formar un sujeto moderno que en el siglo XX también se vio expuesto a las experiencias de educación de los sentidos, a la disposición estética de su apariencia y pudo hacerse a una sensibilidad reflexiva. Los modos y representaciones de la experiencia corporal afianzaron el orden social moderno, y sus principios éticos, estéticos y políticos devinieron formas encarnadas de vida.
