In this volume of eclectic reflections, Harold F. Miller looks back on fifty years on the African continent. Much of that time was spent in service positions within Christian organizations in Tanzania, Sudan and Kenya. The pieces range widely in theme and geography: they include encounters with the luminaries of the independence movements as well as conversations with the local wood seller; excursions to Indian Ocean islands and strolls through a Nairobi neighborhood. They include meditations on trees and sand dams, peacemaking and art. Encounters in Africa offers glimpses of a lifetime spent in Africa, and documents a pivotal transition period in the history of the continent.

An interdisciplinary collection of essays on the history of political and cultural ties between Africa and Russia/the Soviet Union. An impressive international group of scholars - historians, political scientists and literary critics - come together to define the dimensions and to analyse and interpret the substance of these encounters. From the African ancestry of Russia's greatest poet to the experiences of radical black pilgrims in the USSR and the Soviet Union's Cold War adventures in Russia, it's all here.

Evil In Africa written by William C. Olsen and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-08-30 with Social Science categories.

William C. Olsen, Walter E. A. van Beek, and the contributors to this volume seek to understand how Africans have confronted evil around them. Grouped around notions of evil as a cognitive or experiential problem, evil as malevolent process, and evil as an inversion of justice, these essays investigate what can be accepted and what must be condemned in order to evaluate being and morality in African cultural and social contexts. These studies of evil entanglements take local and national histories and identities into account, including state politics and civil war, religious practices, Islam, gender, and modernity.

African Encounters With Domesticity written by Karen Tranberg Hansen and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992 with History categories.

Anthropologists usually think of domesticity as the activities related to the home and the family. Such activities have complex meanings associated with the sense of space, work, gender, and power. The contributors to this interdisciplinary collection of papers examine how indigenous African notions of domesticity interact with Western notions to transform the meaning of such activities. They explore the interactions of notions of domesticity in a number of settings in the twentieth century and the kinds of personal troubles and public issues these interactions have provoked. They also demonstrate that domesticity, as it emerged in Africa through the colonial encounter, was culturally constructed, and they show how ideologies of work, space, and gender interact with broader political-economic processes. In her introduction, Hansen explains how the meaning of domesticity has changed and been contested in the West, specifies which of these shifting meanings are relevant in the African context, and summarizes the historical processes that have affected African ideologies of domesticity.
