The essays in Border Fetishisms explore the cultural, commercial, political and erotic dimensions that distinguish fetish formations in fractured colonial and postcolonial spaces. Spanning such topics as Surinamese conversion to Christianity to shoplifting in Georgian England, to face the fetish, the contributors neither demagicalize the fetish nor normalize the commodity. Instead, they call for the inclusion of material things -- as fetishes or not -- within the experience of human sufferings and joy. Contributors: Robert J. Foster, Webb Keane, Susan Leg6~ne, Annelies Moors, Peter Pels, William Pietz, Adela Pinch, Patricia Spyer, Peter Stallybrass, Michael Taussig.

The Republic of Suriname has a long and rich heritage of Bible translation spanning more than 250 years, yet very little has been published on its history. In this book Dr Franklin Jabini, a Surinamer as well as a translator himself, provides the reader with a detailed survey of the history of Bible translation across the many language groups of Suriname. Illustrating the difficult and complicated process of Bible translation, the book furnishes brief biographies of translators, both national and foreign, as well as the denominations and parachurch organizations involved. This book is not just a historical account, but provides important insight into the efforts of reaching all tribes, tongues and nations with God’s word.

Twentieth Century Suriname written by Rosemarijn Höfte and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-07-04 with History categories.

Suriname is a fascinating yet also little known Caribbean country. Fascinating because a unique variety of lifestyles and group identities has characterized this country from its early beginnings as a European plantation colony, but even more so since the influx of contract laborers from British India and Java in the nineteenth century. Little known because even when attention was focused on the country, particularly following a military coup d'état in 1980, this awareness has contributed little to a better understanding of the country's complex developments. In fact, the media have not unveiled but rather covered the essentials of the evolving Suriname society. Combining a broad thematic approach with a focus on long-term developments in Suriname, 20th Century Suriname consists of fourteen chapters that discuss the main trends with respect to major areas of research. Topics such as Surinamese politics and economics, as well as its social, religious, and cultural aspects are covered by the best contemporary specialists on Suriname in the United States, the Netherlands, and Suriname. This volume provides an accessible introduction to Suriname for a general audience, including graduate and undergraduate students, and an authoritative 'state of the art review' for Suriname specialists.

We Slaves Of Suriname written by Anton de Kom and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-01-19 with Literary Criticism categories.

Anton de Kom’s We Slaves of Suriname is a literary masterpiece as well as a fierce indictment of racism and colonialism. In this classic book, published here in English for the first time, the Surinamese writer and resistance leader recounts the history of his homeland, from the first settlements by Europeans in search of gold through the era of the slave trade and the period of Dutch colonial rule, when the old slave mentality persisted, long after slavery had been formally abolished. 159 years after the abolition of slavery in Suriname and 88 years after its initial publication, We Slaves of Suriname has lost none of its brilliance and power.

In Een zwarte vrijstaat in Suriname, deel 2, Van Wetering and Thoden van Velzen relate the history of the Okanisi after their successful escape into the South American rainforest and the signing of a peace treaty with Dutch planters in 1760. Following Part 1, which deals with their struggle for freedom, this volume describes the emergence of an autonomous Okanisi Maroon state; its integration into the economic life of the Guiana’s, but also its internal development, as it manifested itself through prophetic movements, anti-witchcraft purges and the rise of a native church. Predominantly based on oral sources, this book charts a previously undocumented history and provides a unique insight into a culture emerging from the roots of slavery.

The Republic of Suriname, located in northern South America has a rich and diverse history going back several centuries. This has seen the introduction of Christianity and the establishment and creation of many church denominations. To date, major theological works have failed to provide correct, balanced and informative dialogue on the history of Christianity and its developments in Suriname. In response to the lack of information available to the academic world this publication aims to provide a survey of the history, a summary of the works of theologians and a guide to reliable sources about Christianity in Suriname. Through overviewing the history of the major denominations in Suriname and focusing on some major issues surrounding Christianity the author delivers a unique single volume for both the general reader and a starting point for further research.

The Freshwater Fishes Of Suriname written by Jan H.A. Mol and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-09-19 with Science categories.

With some 480 currently known fresh- and brackish-water fish species, Suriname has a rich inland fish fauna that is related to the most diverse freshwater fish fauna on planet Earth, i.e. that of the Amazon River. Interest in the freshwater fishes of Suriname by naturalists and scientists extends back over more than two centuries. Suriname is undoubtedly the site of origin of the oldest extant preserved specimens of South American fishes and 19 Surinamese fish species were described and figured by Linnaeus. Building on ichthyological studies initiated in the 1960s by the Brokopondo Project, this book provides an introduction to the freshwater fish fauna of Suriname, including identification keys, photographs of the species and descriptions of their habitats, that should be especially useful to decision makers, conservation biologists, aquarium hobbyists and eco-tourists.
