Editor Florence Selder and her team decided to write a book to help people learn how to pull their lives together after suffering a terrible loss. When they began researching the literature, they found mostly theoretical discussions of loss that were sorely lacking in accounts from people who had actually had first-hand experience with severe loss. To fill this void, to offer a penetrating look at the different ways that individuals react to and deal with loss, the editors collected stories from over 100 people, each of whom shared the story of a tragedy they lived through. Especially interested in the vicarious loss experienced by caregivers as a result of working with patients who have suffered a loss, Selder has included many stories and case reports written by nurses, therapists and social workers who not only describe how they have been affected by their patients' losses, but also what they did to help them. The process of recovery from loss is different for each person, but one method that has proved extremely effective for many, many people is listening and talking to other people who have experienced a similar incident - the people-helping-people dynamic known as self-help. Enduring Grief is a self-help group in the form of a book. By reading these personal accounts, readers will be able to discover how others felt and reacted to a loss, how they solved their problems and coped - and, in many cases, how they didn't. Also, for those in the helping professions, whether nurse, therapist or teacher, this book presents a goldmine of information on helping methods in the form of case studies. The instruction by personal example offered by these storytellers will help readers learn how to cope with their own losses and also how to help others.

The Heart Of Grief written by Thomas Attig and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-07-15 with Family & Relationships categories.

In The Heart of Grief, Attig gives us an inspiring and profoundly insightful meditation on the meaning of grief, showing how it can be the path toward a lasting love of those who have died. Recounting dozens of stories of people who have struggled with deaths in their lives, he describes grieving as a transition from loving in presence to loving in separation. The thing we long for most--the return of the one who is missing--is the very thing that we can never have, kindling the intense pain of our loss. But Attig argues that we can, in fact, build an enduring, even reciprocal, love, a love that tempers our pain. He tells stories, for instance, of a young girl taking some of her dead sister's practical advice as she enters high school, a widower realizing how much intimate life with his wife has colored his character, and an athlete drawing inspiration from his dead brother and achieving what they had dreamed of together. Far from forgetting our loved ones, Attig urges us to explore ways in which our memories of the departed can be sustained, our understanding of them enhanced, and their legacies embraced, so they continue to play active roles in our everyday and inner lives. Groundbreaking and original, inspiring and compassionate, The Heart of Grief offers guidance, comfort, and a new understanding of how we grieve.

Have you suffered the death of someone you love? Do you know someone struggling with grief? It's one of the most difficult things we humans experience. As a pastor Rev. Dr. Samuel Wright had walked with hundreds of people who had lost loved ones. Then his son died. He had to endure the abuse of grief in a different, deeper and more personal way. In Heartbreak to Hope: Overcoming the Anguish of Grief he merges his pastoral wisdom with his own despair as he walks with the reader toward hope. In his vulnerability and honesty he does not sugarcoat the pain of grief. Yet he offers help to those struggling with grief in a way that is real. The aim of this book is to enable you to: - Grant yourself permission to grieve - Learn practical ways to cope with grief - Receive honest encouragement and insight - Grow in the grace and love of God in spite of your pain - Connect with the witnesses of the Bible who also suffered losses If you have lost a child, a spouse, a relative or friend, this book will help you cope with your grief and move you toward hope and peace. We are not taught how to grieve. Grief is something we have to learn through tragedy and loss. However, there are things that we can learn from one another, especially from those who have walked through the valley of the shadow of death. God may seem a million miles away or non-existent to the person enduring grief. What Dr. Wright shares is that God's grace is what gets us through each moment with the help of friends and family, God's own presence and the stories of others. Not only is this book helpful for those who are wrestling with mourning, but it is a valuable guide to those who care for others in their loss. By witnessing the depths of despair of this pastor and his movement toward hope, caregivers will grow in their compassion toward those who mourn. Jesus taught that we should weep with those who weep. Heartbreak to Hope enables caregivers to empathize with those grieving the death of a loved one. Each chapter contains a passage from the Bible, which connects to grieving, the author's personal testimony to the devastation of grief, words of encouragement, suggestions for moving forward, and a prayer. Because of its inspirational wisdom Heartbreak to Hope makes a meaningful and comforting gift to those who are in the midst of despair over a lost loved one as well as for those who care for them.

Dealing with death could be a never ending journey. Many are left feeling lost and overcome with grief. For some, losing a loved one is just too much to bear. It is easy to succumb to overwhelming grief. I should know. I have been down that road more times than a few. I have lost some the most precious people in my life and their passing created a whirlwind of emotions for me. There were times I simply wanted to give up. I could not imagine my life without them. Without them, I felt I could not go on. However, I found that trusting God's Word regarding death provided all of the comfort I needed to manage the emotions that I was experiencing during my times of loss and sadness. That is why I decided to write about it. I am no expert on the matter. I am just your everyday woman who has always felt comfortable telling my story to anyone who would listen. I have experienced almost every emotion possible in regards to losing a loved one and I just want to share my story.

Grief is a part of life. If we live life joyfully, if we love deeply . . . we open our hearts to the pain of loss. It's said that you can't have joy without sorrow. They are inextricably intertwined. In Surviving Grief, Victoria Mitchell takes us on a journey through this truth. She focuses on what we grieve, how we grieve, and, ultimately, what healing looks like. Victoria threads her own grief stories throughout as she illustrates the value of writing your own story and the importance of sharing it with others. Whether death of a loved one, loss of relationship, or sorrow surrounding other life changes - she addresses each with vulnerability and authenticity. In later chapters, Victoria offers valuable suggestions in helping others through loss, and looks at how we face our own mortality. As she's done for hundreds of clients throughout her career, Victoria will help you assemble a tool box of coping skills and self-care practices, allowing you to endure and learn from the most difficult times of your life.
