I'm a hobby woodworker and have been since I was a kid. When I first started working with wood, all my tools were hand-tools: a saw, a hammer, a hand-drill with bits, and a file. Over the years I've collected many tools--both power and hand-tools. I've come to appreciate the unique capabilities of tools like a finishing plane and a biscuit joiner. The spiritual disciplines, or following skills as I like to call them, are much like tools. Some of the more common tools in our walk with Christ are prayer and reading the Bible. But I think many of us are "tool-poor." That is, we're only accustomed to using a few tools in our relationship with Christ. As a result, we're somewhat limited in our overall skills as His followers.Imagine trying to build a nice cabinet with only a hammer and saw.Perseverance is like that tool that no serious woodworker should be without. Yet, as a spiritual discipline, perseverance is all too often absent from our lives. Jesus and the writers of the New Testament all warned us that we would experience hardship and suffering in this life. But, it's so easy to quit; it's so easy to give in.Perseverance is the tool we need for enduring trials and responding to them in a godly manner. We also need perseverance to resist temptation and flee from sin. In Paul's last letter to Timothy he encouraged him, "But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship." (2 Timothy 4:5) You and I need to "Endure hardship, persevere, and hang in there." But some of you may be asking, "Why? Why should I persevere?" That's the question we seek to answer in this book as well as show you how to persevere.

Hardship is a word with a basic definition which we all understand, and yet the actual meaning of the word is different for all of us. For some, hardship means driving an older unreliable vehicle which sometimes won't start. For many, hardship means not always having something to eat. Then there are those who experience hardship at a level so difficult and intense, you will only appreciate the true meaning of it if you yourself went through it. Someone who was molested, for example, experienced a pain far more traumatic and intense than anybody else could understand unless they themselves had also gone through a similar experience. The same goes for those who experienced the loss of a child, went through a divorce or walked the road of battling an incurable disease. For those people the word 'hardship' has taken on a whole new meaning. The reality of the pain experienced can be so great it will either make the person or break the person. Life is not about whether you will experience the storms or not. Rather, life is about what you are made of when the storm comes, and how much you are able to grow while you are enduring the storm. Faith, when applied correctly, is the key by which we not only endure hardship but also overcome it. By reading this book you will: * Discover what faith really is * Learn how to activate your faith * Become aware of the things that tend to get us out of faith * Gain new perspective on why we sometimes go through difficult times * Learn how to not only endure but also overcome hardship

A self-help book drawn from the author's elite military training and autobiographical experiences over the course of being forced to survive for fourteen years within the confines of a notorious privately owned Corrections Corporation of America prison in the state of Tennessee. This is not just a self-help manual for the incarcerated or interested parties, but rather a rich detailed account of how an elite soldier survived a personal journey through a world of extreme emotional and psychological duress, violence, death, corruption, prison politics, and survival while refusing to join a prison gang for protection. This is the experienced knowledge of a soldier who is forced to become a prison convict and continue, seemingly alone, upon a dangerous warrior's path which ultimately culminates into a personal spiritual journey. If experience is the most cruel teacher of all than the tools, knowledge, wisdom, and insights shared within the pages of this book were acquired through unadulterated cruelty.

Can adversity lead to enduring positive change across the lifespan? Providing a thoughtful and considered exploration of this question, this book presents a critical reassessment of posttraumatic growth, based on correcting prior theoretical and methodological limitations in the current research. Its core argument is that posttraumatic growth should be reconceptualized as positive personality change, and thus should be studied using novel methodological approaches from the field of personality psychology. Broadly, this argument is put forward in five progressive sections. Beginning by giving a conceptual and interdisciplinary overview of posttraumatic growth as a phenomenon, the volume then reviews the current academic conceptualization of posttraumatic growth and makes a case for a ‘reset’ in the research. The next section maintains that posttraumatic growth is in fact a form of positive personality change and should be analyzed using personality science methodology. Using positive personality change as a theoretical foundation for posttraumatic growth, the following two sections look at posttraumatic growth in context. It is explored both in the long term, such as in the development of reflective knowledge and wisdom, and in specific situations such as with refugees in Sri Lanka and survivors of the Rwandan genocide. Lastly, Exploring the Psychological Benefits of Hardship: A Critical Reassessment of Posttraumatic Growth concludes by offering recommendations for scholars and researchers that will improve the quality of research on posttraumatic growth, and will advance this important and worthy field.

This book series contains thousands of Master Cheng Yen’s teachings or responses to questions on all sorts of matters. The earliest teaching documented in this series was given in 1980, when then president, Mr. Chiang Ching-kuo, visited the Jing Si Abode in Hualien. During this visit, Master Cheng Yen shared about the groups Tzu Chi Merit Association helped, the kinds of help provided, and its operating process. The most recent teaching was given in April 2021, after a Taroko Express train operated by the Taiwan Railways Administration derailed in and caused serious casualties. Master Cheng Yen expressed her empathy and compassion to the volunteers who went to the accident site right after the incident to provide help. The historical materials span as long as forty-one years and across two centuries. Volume One covers topics on living and dying. Life and death are natural phenomena. When we look at them with a broader perspective, we will be able to let them go. As such, we can be unhindered and unattached. Though life is limited, wisdom life lasts forever. Thus, for Buddhist practitioners, life and death can be taken more lightly; it is more important to nourish our wisdom life. We must eradicate the defilements in our minds and return to our innocent, pure, intrinsic nature.

Can God Be Trusted written by John G. Stackhouse Jr. and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-04-09 with Religion categories.

In a world riddled with disappointment, malice, and tragedy, what rationale do we have for believing in a benevolent God? If God is all-powerful and all-loving, why is there so much evil in the world? John Stackhouse takes a historically informed approach to this dilemma, examining what philosophers and theologians have said on the subject and offering reassuring answers for thoughtful readers. Stackhouse explores how great thinkers have grappled with the problem of evil--from the Buddha, Confucius, Augustine, and David Hume to Martin Luther, C. S. Lewis, and Alvin Plantinga. Without brushing aside the serious contradictions posed by a God who allows incurable diseases, natural disasters, and senseless crimes to bring misery into our lives, Stackhouse asks if a world completely without evil is what we truly want. Would a life without suffering be a meaningful life? Could free will exist if we were able to choose only good? Stackhouse examines what the best minds have had to say on these questions and boldly affirms that the benefits of evil, in fact, outweigh the costs. Finally, he points to Christian revelation--which promises the transformation of suffering into joy--as the best guide to God's
