This book presents methods for the calculation of the displacement of structures under load by using the rate of change of work done (by the loads) and the corresponding rate of change of strain energy in the structure. The methods solve linear problems, statically indeterminate structures, nonlinear problems, frames and stiffness matrices used in finite element analysis. The method extends to the calculation of critical buckling loads for struts, plates and panels, and the post buckling stiffness of plates and panels. The presentation offers a clear logic without recourse to the concepts of virtual work, minimum potential energy, complementary energy or the unit load method.

"Analysis of structure has its conception for the engineer early in his formal education and follows a set sequency from solving for equilibrium in simple beams and free bodies to more complicated solutions for stresses and deflections in multiply redundant structures. Difficulty arises for the engineer when he loses the sequence of the subject and finds himself memorizing formulas and methods of solution without a clear and concise understanding of the underlying fundamental principles involved in arriving at these formulae and methods of solution. The Aircraft Structural Analyst finds himself in a relatively new field of engineering structural design. Here the problems encountered are different, more complicated, and more exacting, as far as a complete knowledge or underlying assumptions and approximations are concerned, than structural problems encountered by other engineers. With the assumption that the reader of this report has a background in elementary mechanics of elastic bodies and understands the assumptions that exist in the basic elastic theories, it is the intent of this report to take the reader from start to finish through the method of analysis of indeterminate structures which, through past experience, has been observed to be the most flexible, all encompassing, method available for the solution of the most complicated problems encountered in aircraft structural design"--Preface, leaf 1

Preface As Engineering Structures And Their Environments Become More Diverse And Complex, It Is Not Enough That The Engineer Be Adept At Applying The Classical Methods Of Structural Analysis. More Importantly, He Must Be Aware Of The Limitations Of The Underlying Theories And Be Able To Make Intelligent Judgments About The Validity Of The Basic Assumptions. It Is Hoped That, By Starting With A Discussion Of The Classical Theory Of Elasticity, This Text Will Make Clear The Applicability And Limitations Of Linear Structural Mechanics. The Emphasis Of The Book Is On The Development And Applications Of Work And Energy Methods. The Principles Of Virtual Work, Complementary Virtual Work, And Various Energy Theorems Derived There From Are Used To Study The Behavior Of Linearly Elastic Structures. While No Attempt Is Made To Cover The Many Ad Hoc Techniques Which Are Appropriate For Special Types Of Structures, The Basic Force And Displacement Approaches Treated Herein Have A Wide Range Of Application And Are Particularly Adaptable To Machine Computation. This Book Was Developed From Class Notes Used In Teaching A Two-Term Introductory Course In Structural Mechanics At Princeton University. Portions Of The Notes Have Also Been Used In Advanced Strength-Of-Materials And Mechanical Vibration Courses At The University Of Kentucky. Those Enrolled In The Courses Include Juniors, Seniors, And Beginning Graduate Students From The Departments Of Aerospace, Mechanical, And Civil Engineering, And Engineering Mechanics. It Is Presumed That The Students Have Had The Normal Undergraduate Courses In Engineering Mechanics And Have Been Exposed To Ordinary Differential Equations. Following An Introductory Chapter, The Book Is Divided Into Three Parts. Part I, Comprising Chapters 2 To 5, Is Concerned With The Foundations Of Solid Mechanics. The Concepts Of Stress, Strain, And Material Behavior Are Reviewed In Chapters 2, 3, And 4. Virtual Work Principles Are Developed In Chapter 5 And Are Used To Derive Reciprocal Theorems And Minimum Energy Principles. Exact And Approximate Solutions Are Shown For The Stress And Deformation Distributions In Several Structural Elements.

This text delivers a fundamental coverage for advanced undergraduates and postgraduates of structural engineering, and professionals working in industrial and academic research. The methods for structural analysis are explained in detail, being based on basic static, kinematics and energy methods previously discussed in the text. A chapter deals with calculations of deformations which provides for a good understanding of structural behaviour. Attention is given to practical applications whereby each theoretical analysis is reinforced with worked examples. A major industrial application consisting of a simple bridge design is presented, based on various theoretical methods described in the book. The finite element as an extension of the displacement method is covered, but only to explain computer methods presented by use of the structural analysis package OCEAN. An innovative approach enables influence lines calculations in a simple mannger. Basic algebra given in the appendices provides the necessary mathematical tools to understand the text. Provides an understanding of structural behaviour, paying particular attention to applications, and reinforces theoretical analysis with worked examples Details the methods for structural analysis, based on basic static, kinematics and energy methods
