La enfermedad es la causa principal de muerte en mujeres y hombres y mujeres. Sin embargo, dicha la enfermedad les afecta de manera diferente, tanto desde el punto de vista en lo biológico como genérico. La presente obra, de corte sociológico, contiene los resultados de una investigación sobre los sesgos de género en la atención de mujeres con enfermedad coronaria en los servicios de salud de México. Presenta un detallado análisis sobre cómo ellas viven la enfermedad, la atención médica que reciben, cómo construyen estrategias para conseguirla, cómo perciben su salud y construyen estrategias para conseguirla, cómo perciben su salud y cómo elaboran explicaciones de sobre su padecimiento. Las explicaciones médicas enfatizan las diferencias biológicas, pero esas explicaciones, al omitir la construcción sociocultural, se convierten en desigualdades de género al omitir la construcción sociocultural que se expresan en la atención médica y en las vivencias de las mujeres enfermas. En la investigación se explica identifica por qué permanecen invisibilizadas las particularidades de género en la atención, tanto para ellas mismas como para el personal médico que las atiende. Siguiendo Desde la teoría de las prácticas de Pierre Bourdieu, fue posible construir los conceptos de habitus de género y el de habitus paciente obediente, que nos permitieron profundizar teóricamente sobre en el este problema de las desigualdades en la atención médica. El diseño de la investigación fue predominantemente cualitativo pero con complementariedad cuantitativa. Se observó que persiste la idea de la enfermedad coronaria como enfermedad masculina; que los síntomas de las mujeres tienden a ser diagnosticados como malestares cotidianos; que pierden importancia cuando a las mujeres se las cataloga de emocionales e histéricas. Se observó, además, que se mantiene un alto nivel de desinformación sobre la prevención y atención de la enfermedad coronaria en mujeres. Muchas participantes en la investigación expresaron que los sentimientos lesionados afectan directo al corazón.
