Die innovativen Engelfiguren Caravaggios und sogenannter Caravaggisten werden hier erstmalig und systematisch im Zusammenhang mit den erstaunlich kreativen theologischen Engelvorstellungen der Zeit um 1600 untersucht. Da sie kein Pendant in der sichtbaren Welt haben, ist das Sehen von Engeln notwendigerweise ein Sehen von Bildern. Bilder von Engeln thematisieren daher stets die Leistungen des Mediums bei der Sichtbarmachung des Unsichtbaren. Anders als heute galten Engel in den Jahren um 1600 als zeitweilig sichtbare Bestandteile der realen Welt. Engel-Bilder dürfen so nicht allein als symbolische Konstruktionen, sondern zudem als Abbilder realer Seheindrücke gelten. Die bislang ausgebliebene Würdigung von Engeln als ästhetischen Reflexionsfiguren und als Figuren theoretischer Reflexion offenbart eine bislang unbeachtete Gemeinsamkeit gemalter und theoretisierter Engelkörper: ihre fundamental poietische Bildlichkeit.

Multistable figures offer an intriguing model for arbitrating conflicting positions. Moving back and forth between different aspects, one recognizes that contradictory descriptions of a situation can be equally valid and that disputes over the correct account can be settled without dissolving differences or establishing a higher synthesis. Yet, the experience of a gestalt switch also offers a model for radical conversions and revolutions, that is, for irreversible leaps to incommensurable alternatives foiling ideals of rational choice while providing the possibility and necessity of decision. Accentuating the temporal dimensions of multistable figures, this multidisciplinary volume illuminates the critical potential and limits of multistability as a complex figure of thought.

The Color of Desire tells the story of how, in the aftermath of gay liberation, race played a crucial role in shaping the trajectory of queer, German politics. Focusing on the Federal Republic of Germany, Christopher Ewing charts both the entrenchment of racisms within white, queer scenes and the formation of new, antiracist movements that contested overlapping marginalizations. Far from being discrete political trajectories, racist and antiracist politics were closely connected, as activists worked across groups to develop their visions for queer politics. Ewing describes not only how AIDS workers, gay tourists, white lesbians, queer immigrants, and Black feminists were connected in unexpected ways but also how they developed contradictory concerns that comprised the full landscape of queer politics. Out of these connections, which often exceeded the bounds of the Federal Republic, arose new forms of queer fascism as well as their multiple, antiracist contestations. Both unsettled the appeals to national belonging, or "homonationalism," on which many white queer activists based their claims. Thus, the story of the making of homonationalism is also the story of its unmaking. The Color of Desire explains how the importance of racism to queer politics cannot—and should not—be understood without also attending to antiracism. Actors worked across different groups, making it difficult to chart separable political trajectories. At the same time, antiracist activists also used the fractures and openings in groups that were heavily invested in the logics of whiteness to formulate new, antiracist organizations and, albeit in constrained ways, shifted queer politics more generally.

Heavenwards is Nicolas Faure's answer to Rainer Maria Rilke's question in the First Duino Elegy: "Who, if I cried out, would hear me among the Angelic Orders?" At first sight these photographs seem to show nothing but forests, trees, rivers and light, but in every picture there is something hiding - a human being, an animal, perhaps an angel, as the German subtitle suggests. There lies an uncertainty in Faure's pictures, about what is real and what will happen in the future. As Rilke puts it: "Perhaps there remains some tree on a slope, that we can see again each day: there remains to us yesterday's street, and the thinned out loyalty of a habit that liked us, and so stayed, and never departed."
