Excerpt from England and Russia in Asia The subject is certainly one of more than incidental or passing interest. It is well-nigh certain to reappear again and again, until the issue is decided by the final arbitrament of arms. There is an irrepressible conflict between England and Russia for commercial and military supremacy in Central and Western Asia; and all the world looks to see it go on until one of these powers decisively triumphs over the other. Excerpt from England and Russia in Central Asia, Vol. 1 The words used here will be proved true, and the only effectual remedies against the evil are those bold measures from which timid spirits would shrink. The pith of the whole argument is to be found in the fact that we are now strong enough to solve the Central Asian Question wholly in our own favour. Are we to put Off action until the tables are turned and Russia is more prepared than she is at present, while we may have grown less strong? Or shall we finish the business out of hand? Excerpt from England and Russia Face to Face in Asia: Travels With the Afghan Boundary Commission It may possibly be expected that I should say something of the frontier as it has been now demarcated from the Hari Rud to the Oxus. I have, however, several reasons for not touching on this theme: firstly, because I wish this book to be a record of my own personal experiences, and not hearsay reports; and secondly, because I understand that an officer now with the Boundary Commission, and who knows as much of the frontier and its worth as any man, intends on his return to give the world the benefit of his opinion about it. This book is intended to be not only a record of the move ments of the Afghan Boundary Commission, but also a description of travels through country that is practically unknown to the civilised world. I allude, of course, to the route taken by Colonel Ridgeway and his party from N ushki to Herat, and to Badkis generally. A solitary journey from Herat to the Black Sea, after leaving the Commission, enabled me to obtain some information on more than one point of interest to England - such as concerning the demarcation of the russo-persian boundary, which I have given as an Appendix. To suppose that the russo-persian frontier, as recently settled, will long remain a fixture, would be mere self-delusion. I cannot find any distinct definition of the frontier drawn from kalat-i-nadiri to Sarakhs, and it is just in that quarter that rumour credits Russia with further aggressive designs. One of the most significant signs of the times is the proposed construction of a chaussee from Ashka bad to Mashhad. That is the highroad of Russian access to Herat, and it is therefore not surprising that Russia should early develop an interest in it. Excerpt from The Rival Powers in Central Asia: Or the Struggle Between England and Russia in the East 6are scarcely less important, and in both respects Sir Henry Rawlinson's treatise was so exceptionally able, while his conclusions were so striking and convincing, that it is not surprising to find a distinguished Russian professor of international law, F. Martens, calling the famous Memorandum a historical document, in regard to the influence it had on the public mind and policy. Excerpt from England and Russia in Central Asia, Vol. 2: With Two Maps and Appendices Kulab, and not Khulm, as his editor assumed. Camp bell himself pronounced it Kolaub, and this view is confirmed by the fact that he then went to Chich - or Chiab, in Badakshan - at that time ruled by an independent chief. No mention is made of the traveller having crossed the Oxus, nor does the question appear to have suggested itself to his interpreter. Excerpt from Russia in Asia: A Record and a Study 1558-1899 The growth of Asiatic Russia, while of engrossing concern to the political student, the soldier, and the commercial man, has never until now been treated on purely historical lines. My object has been to trace the successive stages of this growth, and to describe the deliberate prosecution of the policy which has largely brought it about. Russia in Asia does not profess to be more than a history, complete yet concise, of Asiatic Russia. In criticising the rival policies of Russia and England, my endeavour has been to present the clear and impar tial deduction that a careful study of those policies yields. The historical chapters are based upon the writings of more than two hundred authorities. The accounts of the numerous military expeditions have, in most cases, been drawn from Russian sources, while my references to the part played by diplomacy are grounded on official correspondence and our own Government publications. I have not occupied space with a full list of the authorities consulted, thinking it sufficient to indicate to those who may desire a closer investigation of the subject, the principal sources where verification and amplification may be found.
