Excerpt from England Under God This work insists on a presumption which per haps the peculiar quality of the English reader alone could justify. It presents a suggestion and not a narrative of the history of his country, and appeals to such an acquaintance with its detail, as can only be found in a people, whose self-respect has raised in their hearts a patriotic curiosity concerning the course of events which has brought them into a condition of so unusual welfare and dignity. This has been Observed by foreigners as a remarkable point in our national character. Thus Frederic Schlegel, in his Philosophy of History (lecture has remarked that, more than any other nation, the English are conversant with their own annals, and have them ever before their eyes. Excerpt from This Realm, This England The Charm of the chalk is in some degree the charm of insularity among many of us. Right or wrong, one hugs the idea that it is above all other rocks the special rock of England, geologically our rock. It is something of a surprise to find a pale faced shore across the water as well as at home. Travelling by train through Normandy anyone who knows the English chalk scenery well - its streams and hills, and the configuration of the land - but does not know France well, may wonder still more to find some of the familiar features there too. Where the chalk is really the soil or undersoil, even though it does not actually break through the green in places or take the form of rolling down and grey greensward, I think it cannot be overlooked or mis taken. In Normandy you can tell you are on the Chalk in places, though you may not see a Sign of down. There is something in its form as well as in its flora, and, where water flows, there is something still more in its streams and meadows that announces chalk quite clearly. Excerpt from Under the English Crown I have visited in this fashion the fascinating wildness of Scotland, peacefully united to England through the accession of James VI. To Elizabeth's throne, -then Wales, last refuge of the ancient Britons, where as behind a fortress they made their final stand before defeat, and where they now remain, hidden and as if half asleep, awaiting the moment when, loyal subjects still, they will be granted an independent legislative existence, - and finally Ireland, Oppressed and rebellious Ireland, true Ireland of Sorrow, whose long and tragic confusions promise at last to solve themselves without further catastrophe, the last act of the drama ringing down upon the dawn of a new and happier era. Excerpt from The Moral and Political Crisis of England: Most Respectfully Inscribed to the Higher and Middle Classes To the moral eye, never did this Country exhibit a more extraordinary and interesting scene, than at this moment. It is not one prominent feature, however striking, but the expression of the whole face, which claims, and fives our attention. May we contemplate it with deliberate wisdom, and act with the energy, which the approaching crisis imperiously requires. By the most signal interpositions of Providence, we were brought safe, and victorious, through the most dreadful war ever waged, and against the most fearful opposition nation ever grappled with. We were covered with glory, and intoxicated with joy. Throughout the contest, a furious faction hung on our launches, predicting defeat, glorying in our reverses, and repining at our victories. Yet we conquered; for God was on our side. While the shout of victory was in our ears, the Destroyer was brought a Prisoner to our coast. Again that faction lifted its loud voice, would have fraternized with him in his bonds, and even have received him, as a friend, into the heart of the country. Thank God, that deadly blow was warded. But though repeatedly foiled on the high places of his pride, a prisoner and an exile, and his invincible legions compelled to submit to superior force; yet it too soon appeared, that neither on the Continent, nor yet in England, had we slain the impious spirit of Jacobinism.
