Excerpt from The History of England, Vol. 1 of 3: From the Accession of King George the Third, to the Conclusion of Peace in the Year One Thousand Seven Hundred and Eighty-Three I'r may {till be doubted, whether the period is yet arrived, when the confpicuous perfons of the prefent reign can be fo impartially reviewed. The heat of party conteft has ren dered the public fo familiar with calumniatory declamation, that the hiftorian incurs fome ri e in venturing to difmifs from his vocabu lary certain abuiive phrafes, or in prefuming to doubt of certain fuppofed political facts, f0 gravely advanced, and fo forcibly urged by the wife and the eloquent. Ile expofes himfelf to a hill greater hazard in attempting to refeue from long accredited imputations, cha rafiers, whom the enmity of faction, and the greedy credulity of the public, have con feerated to obloquy, and in venturing to thew, that in many in ances unbluihing calumny has been miftaken for fohet truth, faction for patriotifm, and felfilhnefs for public fpirit. Excerpt from The History of England, Vol. 1 of 3 My situation I conceive to be favourable for the disco very and delivery of truth in history. I belong to no sect or party, in religion or politics. A member of the Church of England, I give it in my mind a moderate preference to any other, without taking on me to assert that it is ab solutely the best; in politics, it is to me personally a mat ter of perfect indi 'erence what party has the disposal of the patronage of the state, for place or pension I neither desire nor want, and would not accept. Perhaps this forms as near an approach as may be to the paradoxical character of a good historian - that i1 ne faudroit etre d'aucune te ligion, d'auctm pays, d'aucune profession, d'aucun parti. Excerpt from History of England, Vol. 1 of 3: From the Peace of Utrecht to the Peace of Aix-La-Chapelle The era of the Georges in England may be compared to the era of the Antonines at Rome. It was a period combining happiness and glory - a period of kind rulers and a prosperous people. While improvement was advancing at home with gigantic strides, while great wars were waged abroad, the domestic repose and enjoyment of the nation were scarce for a moment ever broken through. The current was strong and rapid, but the surface remained smooth and unruffled. Lives were seldom lost, either by popular breaches of the law or by its rigorous execution. The population augmented fast, but wealth augmented faster still: comforts became more largely diffused, and knowledge more generally cultivated. Unlike the era of the Antonines, this prosperity did not depend "on the character of a single man." Its foundations were laid on ancient and free institutions, which, good from the first, were still gradually improving, and which alone, amongst all others since the origin of civil society, have completely solved the great problem how to combine the greatest security to property with the greatest freedom of action. It is true, however, that this golden period by no means affords us unmixed cause for self-congratulation, and contains no small alloy of human frailties and of human passions. Some of the quiet I have mentioned may be imputed to corruption, as much as some of the troubles to faction. This book is a great introduction into the history of the British Empire and women who helped to shape it. The book starts with the very first queen in the history of Great Britain, Matilda of Flanders, the wife of William the conqueror, and goes through all the history, mentioning Berengaria of Navarre, the queen of the legendary king Ricard I and all the wives of Henry VIII among the others. The book is aimed at young adults and is written in a simple, understandable, and somewhat naïve manner characteristic of the Victorian-era books for young ladies. Yet, the light and relaxing tone of the book will make it interesting for adults seeking for an entertaining read with educational value. It contains a lot of captivating moments too. For example, the very first story of the book, tells that to win heart of her future queen, William the Conqueror, rolled her in mud and beat her. _x000D_

Excerpt from The Literary History of England, Vol. 1 of 3: In the End of the Eighteenth and Beginning of the Ninetheenth Century It is with diffidence that the Author of the following volumes offers them to the public. The subject is a great one, and so manifold in its details that it is impossible not to have made omissions in various quarters: and especially in those on which she can pretend to least knowledge, in the graver literature of Science and Philosophy. It was intended originally that the work should extend farther, and come down to the elder figures even of our own times, the poets who are now regnant in England, and the many eminent writers who have but just departed; but the period before our own, which has formed them and us, and which reaches into our own by so many survivals, was found too rich and ample to allow of further additions. Excerpt from History of England, Vol. 1 of 3: From the First Invasion by the Romans to the Accession of Henry VIII This Work contains the History of the Southern Division of this Island, from its first Invasion by the Romans to the Accession of Henry VIII. To render it worthy the patronage of the public, the author has spared no pains in consulting the most ancient historians, and comparing their narratives with such authentic documents as are known to exist. Anxious, at the same time, to avoid the two extremes of prolixity on the one hand, and of brevity on the other, he has been careful to introduce nothing which he deemed trivial or irrelevant, and to exclude nothing which appeared to him important in its consequences, or illustrative of the character of the times. The historian ought not to confine himself to the barren recital of facts. It is his duty to trace the silent progress of nations from barbarism to refinement; and to mark their successive improvements in the arts of legislation and government But in the performance of this duty he must keep a steady rein on the imagination; or he will mistake fiction for truth, and write a romance in the place of a history.
