Excerpt from English and American Literature for Schools and Colleges II. Subordinate to these authors are those less famous with whom all but the most superficial students should be acquainted, and who would necessarily be excluded in a briefer consideration of our literature. III. Authors' belonging to the literature of knowl edge, rather than to the literature of power, writers whose services must always be remembered in any complete history of literature, these, together with their works, are mentioned in the introductory paragraphs of each chapter. IV. English authors have been chronologically divided into six groups for the purpose of giving the student a clearer idea of what writers were contemporaneous, and, at the same time, effectively to present the movement dur ing each epoch. It is believed that the classification is a natural one, and that while doing no violence to similar and well-settled plans, it more exactly discriminates the periods of actual change in the literary spirit. Excerpt from Outline History of English and American Literature: For Use in Colleges and Schools IT has been my object to compress into this book the minimum of what every young person should know of the literature of our own country and England, even if his education is strictly scientific. I believe that Specializing in any one period is more likely to prove fruitful and of benefit to the student if preceded by a general review of the development of thought and expres sion in the English-speaking peoples. Excerpt from A Manual of American Literature: A Text-Book for Schools and Colleges HE systematic study of English Literature, as part of the course of ordinary English education, has been introduced almost entirely within' the last thirty years. The reader who will take the trouble to look over the old catalogues of our Colleges and Schools, will find no vestige of such a study prior to 1844. The Class Book of Poetry and the Class Book of Prose, issued in 1844, by the author of the present volume, were a feeble beginning in this line. Though intended primarily for reading-books, they were to some extent studies in literature. The selections from the various authors were in each case prefixed by a brief critical and biographical notice of the author, and were arranged in chronological order, so as to fumish the teacher and the scholar with something like an outline of the general eentse of English Literature. Excerpt from English in American Universities The methods employed by our schools in the teaching of English literature have, for some years past, been in a transition stage, exhibiting a strong tendency towards more enlightened ways of dealing with this vastly important subject. The fermentation is of the healthful type, and a fairly clarified product may not unreasonably be expected to result. When Matthew Arnold declared the future of poetry to be immense, he expressed a truth whose full significance may be realized only upon considerable reflection, and the assumption of a broadly philosophical standpoint from which to view the coming conquests of culture. The same idea was expressed, with something of humorous exaggeration, by the author of The New Republic, who attributed to John Stuart Mill the opinion that "when all the greater evils of human life shall have been removed, the human race is to find its chief enjoyment in reading Wordsworth's poetry." To indicate the importance of a due appreciation of literature I hardly need, upon this occasion, to repeat the hackneyed quotations in praise of books, from Richard de Bury to Mr. Ruskin; it may surely be taken for granted that, allowing Arnold's demand on behalf of conduct for a good three-fourths of our life, a considerable share of the remaining fraction may be claimed for literature. Excerpt from Literature in the High School In the face of these expert Opinions, it might seem, at first blush, presumptuous to discuss the matter of English at all, in connection with either high school or college. But not so. Even if literature cannot be taught, - and my experience inclines me to this opinion, - it certainly cannot be learned without the ability to read the written word. Moreover, the best literature cannot 'be read intelligently, and will not be-read at all by the majority, without proper introduction and guidance. In the matter of composition, certainly no man is regarded as fit for service in his community who cannot express his thoughts and desires in cor rect every-day English; and, though I say it that shouldn't, most college professors would be well satisfied with such ideal material! Even the last of the three apparent aspersions by no means eliminates the subject of English from discussion. For, even if the day ever comes when English is not required in the high school, it will always have a favorite place in the curri culum. Granted, then, that English shall continue to occupy a promi nent post in our educational institutions, it is eminently fitting that we should consider the relation between high school and col lege English. This question, strictly American, can best be answered in the truly American way, by asking several others: What are the principal aims in the teaching of English? With these ends in view, what should constitute the content of the course? How is this to be presented so as to bring about the desired results? As the college can but continue the work of the high school, I take, it that it will be sufficient to discuss these questions with special reference to the latter. Excerpt from A Primer of American Literature I. The beginning - AS soon as the English colonists landed on American shores, at Jamestown and Plymouth, they began to think Of the estab lishment Of Schools Of sound learning: in Virginia for the purpose Of educating the Indians, and' in Massachusetts Bay for the supply of church pas tors. By 1619 the proposed Virginia University possessed, as gifts from English donors, fifteen thousand acres Of land and fifteen hundred pounds in money; and its early establishment at Henrico, on the James River, was prevented only by a gen eral Indian massacre on March 22, 1622, when three hundred and forty persons, 'including the superintendent Of the university, lost; their lives. Nothing further was done toward establishing a Virginia college until 1666, and the College Of William and Mary, the outcome of the original2 A primer OF american litera ture. Excerpt from English History in American School Text-Books One of my earliest recollections is that of being taken to see the fireworks which were set off at the pierhead in Ramsgate harbor to celebrate the declaration of peace after the Crimean War. From that time until I went, when quite a young man, into the Gallery of Battles in Versailles - a gallery in which the glories of the French armies are celebrated in acres of canvas by the famous French artist Detaille - I never fully realized that Englishmen had ever been defeated by land or sea. I had been brought up in the belief that one Englishman could beat three Johnny Crapauds. But here all my illusions on that score were shattered at one rude blow, for about one picture in. Every three represented a defeat of the English in either a naval or a military engagement. Then I made up my mind with Sir Robert Walpole, that I would study anything but history, for history must be false. Some such awakening has no doubt come to almost every thinking man or woman who has been brought up on the old methods of teaching the history of their country, whether they be English or American, French or German, Turk or Russian - this no doubt has its effect in inspiring a patriotic feeling; in keeping alive a belief in the invincibleness of one's own nation; a faith in its good star, which has led men on to further victories and inspired them to yet more valorous deeds than their forefathers have performed. Excerpt from A Study of American Literature The general policy has been to mention relatively few persons, in order to leave a definite impression as to each. The especial interests of students in school or college have been steadily considered. In particular, Hawthorne and Longfellow have been treated with relative fullness and somewhat critical method, because their works have, and should have, a very large part in our popular education. The competent and judicious teacher may prefer to throw more emphasis on other authors, Franklin, Irving, Emerson, or Lowell. In that case the materials are of course abundant and close at hand. The chrono logical tables are an integral portion of the work, and supply many items which may be missed in the text. A fuller treatment of one group will be found in the author's New England Poets, Macmillan, 1898. While the present book comes down to the year 1900, there is, naturally, no attempt to pass final judgment in detail on the career Of men and women still living. Excerpt from A Text-Book on English Literature: With Copious Extracts From the Leading Authors, English and American, With Full Instructions as to the Method in Which These Are to Be Studied; Adapted for Use in Colleges, High Schools and Academies The Eight Periods in which Mr. Brooke places English literature, and into which it seems naturally to fall, have, with slight changes, been retained. Each Period is preceded by a Lesson containing a brief resume of the great historical events that have had somewhat to do in shaping or in coloring the literature of that Period. The pupil, it is hoped, will be able to see the better in the light thus shed. We have inserted short estimates of the leading authors, made by the best English and American critics. These criticisms are to be used as indicated above, and as pointed out in the Introductory Lesson. They are not to take the place of the pupil's work, but are themselves to be judged by him, and ratified or amended according to his findings in the study of the authors themselves. Excerpt from The Outlines of Literature: English and American; Based Upon Shaw's Manual of English Literature The New History of English Literature, published in 1884, was a revision of Shaw's Manual of English Litera ture. The Manual had been used for ten years by students in American schools and colleges, and had gained far wider circulation than any other volume dealing with its theme. The New History, with its improved typography, its better arrangement, and its fresh material, displaced the earlier book and gained yet higher commendation. This volume, The Outlines of Literature, English and American, is more than a revision of the New History. Line by line the statements and opinions of that volume have been weighed and verified, much that seemed superfluous has been omitted, new chapters have been added, the book has been rewritten, and new allotments of space and im proved arrangements have been secured. The student of this book will have constant reminder of the inseparable relations of the history and the literature of a people, and will find the literatures of England and of America divided into periods corresponding to distinct periods of national history. The discussion of American authors in this volume seeks to awaken students to due appreciation of the literary achievements of our countrymen. Summaries of chapters and references for collateral readings much commended features of the New History - have been simplified and enlarged in this book; and extended lists Of authors not discussed in these pages are furnished for convenient reference, together with authentic dates and with the title of the chief work or the kind.
