Warm tenderness and fiery critique sit side-by-side in Bolina’s English as A Second Language, a collection that skewers, laments, and celebrates America with intelligence, humility, and a disarming sense of humor. In Jaswinder Bolina’s English as A Second Language and Other Poems, we are asked to imagine the tender and harsh realities of this world within a single breath— a Steiff monkey resting next to a child in a crib and the tired hands of “a thousand /women in Sidi Bouzid” assembling the stuffed animal. Coated in an armor of wit and humor and steeped in the idiosyncrasies of language, English as a Second Language pits sentimentality against cynicism and the personal against the national. What remains is the kaleidoscopic image of the modern American condition. From elegy to persona, wide-ranging poems tell the story of a child of immigrants becoming a parent against the tumultuous backdrop of our politics and culture. Where the collection asks, “What chance do any of us have?,” the poet finds hope, possibility. Bolina’s musical poems zip across time, challenging the fixity of the book. Clues offer the possibility of an alternate reading, where backwards, a new emotional arc appears—dreamlike, the nostalgic origin story of a sleep-deprived parent tracing a path through language and history. Forwards, backwards, English as a Second Language skewers, laments, and celebrates America with intelligence and humility.

In the title poem of Tato LavieraÍs fifth poetry collection, ñMixturao,î he celebrates the mix of diverse cultures and languages that make up America, and challenges those who advocate a monolingual existence: ñWe who integrate / urban America / simmering in each otherÍs / slangs indigenous / nativizing our tonguesÍ / cruising accents / who are you, English, / telling me, ïSpeak only English / or die?Íî Laviera deftly combines English and Spanish in this poetic celebration of his own bilingual, bicultural existence and the ever-increasing use of both languages in all fields, from music to technology. In his poem entitled ñSpanglish,î he writes: ñpues estoy creando spanglish / bi-cultural systems / scientific lexicographical / inter-textual integrations / two expressions / existentially wired / two dominant languages / continentally abrazàndose ƒî Divided into sections that examine borders, women, men, neighborhoods, and folklore, Laviera continues his life-long poetic exploration of his Afro-Puerto Rican roots planted in the urban cacophony of New York City. In ñNideaquinedeallàî (ñNeither from Here nor from Thereî), he writes about the sense of alienation that all immigrants face when they are considered foreigners in both their native and adopted lands. The poems of Tato Laviera are complex and engaging, and through his words, his spirit, his bilingualism, and his dual identity, he offers the reader poems that are a celebration of life and identity.

Born in a Second Language is preoccupied with the question "where are you from?" - exploring what it means to be in-between identities, languages and homes. Born in a Second Language troubles the spectrum between silence (or the limitations of the mouth) and music. Language is an embodied practice, especially present through our hands. Words, specifically names, are a means of conjuring a certain kind of existence, and defining who one will become. Thus, different languages unlock different worlds, and the names speakers answer to open them up to different becomeings. Born in a Second Language is curious about the sonic, imagistic and linear implications on the page of speaking multiple languages when political, historical and cultural weights contend. It's compelled by disappearance and how translation is often a mode through which it occurs across borders - a way in which we obliterate, often due to what is untranslatable and considered unwelcome, as we come into new selves in order to survive new territory. Translation is not only a tool to understand language, but also a process that alters identity as speakers move through space and time. In the work, "home" is one's body, gender, a mother, mother tongue, Brenda Fassie etc. How home is defined impacts each speaker's positionality and perspective; it allows for understanding the connection between the interior and exterior worlds of the speakers. While the use of past geographical homes and history is, in some poems, nostalgic and in homage, the greater project aims to examine how these elements aren't stagnant temporally but rather persist in and shape speakers presently.

Second Language is the fourth volume of work from the highly acclaimed poet Lisel Mueller. The second language of the title, English, supplanted Mueller’s native language when she came to the United States from Hitler’s Germany at age fifteen. But other second languages are at work here as well. The poems in this collection have to do with memory and metaphor, two forces that enable us to interpret our experience. Each is in a sense a second language, and in Mueller’s employ each gains expression in an imaginative and humanistic voice. In “English as a Second Language,” the various meanings of Second Language come together lucidly and effectively.
