At the request of friends, I have prepared this short text-book, outlining the method of carrying forward the course, and emphasizing the principles necessary for the intelligent communication of ideas. It has not been the purpose to write a rhetoric. The many fine distinctions and divisions, the rarefied examples of very beautiful forms of language which a young pupil cannot possibly reproduce, or even appreciate, have been omitted. To teach the methods of simple, direct, and accurate expression has been the purpose; and this is all that can be expected of a high school course in English. The teaching of composition differs from the teaching of Latin or mathematics in this point: whereas pupils can be compelled to solve a definite number of problems or to read a given number of lines, it is not possible to compel expression of the full thought. The full thought is made of an intellectual and an emotional element. Whatever is intellectual may be compelled [page iv] by dint of sheer purpose; whatever is emotional must spring undriven by outside authority, and uncompelled by inside determination. A boy saws a cord of wood because he has been commanded by his father; but he cannot laugh or cry because directed to do so by the same authority. There must be the conditions which call forth smiles or tears. So there must be the conditions which call forth the full expression of thought, both what is intellectual and what is emotional. This means that the subject shall be one of which the writer knows something, and in which he is interested; that the demands in the composition shall not be made a discouragement; and that the teacher shall be competent and enthusiastic, inspiring in each pupil a desire to say truly and adequately the best he thinks and feels.

In the age of Buzzfeeds, hashtags, and Tweets, students are increasingly favoring conversational writing and regarding academic writing as less pertinent in their personal lives, education, and future careers. Writing and Literature: Composition as Inquiry, Learning, Thinking and Communication connects students with works and exercises and promotes student learning that is kairotic and constructive. Dr. Tanya Long Bennett, professor of English at the University of North Georgia, poses questions that encourage active rather than passive learning. Furthering ideas presented in Contribute a Verse: A Guide to First-Year Composition as a complimentary companion, Writing and Literature builds a new conversation covering various genres of literature and writing. Students learn the various writing styles appropriate for analyzing, addressing, and critiquing these genres including poetry, novels, dramas, and research writing. The text and its pairing of helpful visual aids throughout emphasizes the importance of critical reading and analysis in producing a successful composition. Writing and Literature is a refreshing textbook that links learning, literature, and life.

Excerpt from The Public School English Composition The Importance of Composition. Two subjects in the English of the Grammar School are of prime importance - Literature and Composition. Literature is important for its ideas, its formative power; Composition for its development of thought, of mental initiative and personality, as well as for its training in expression, a power of the highest social value. Material of Composition. Composition is primarily a training in thought - in the acquisition of ideas and their orderly and effective arrangement. It is the child's thought that must be trained. Nature's wisdom lives in his instinctive interests and aptitudes, and these determine the material to be presented. What the child rejects or cannot handle must be put aside; what he sees and does in the daily round of life - that interests him because it is near, familiar, and his own - that is the starting-point. Outside his own world the dominant mental interest of the child is the story, especially the story that deals with animals, with primitive life, and is touched with wonder. This narrative interest will naturally progress through the fairy tale, the fable, the legend, historical incident, and biography. As the child grows, his growing powers of observation, analysis, and reasoning will permit and call for the varied material offered by nature, human and animal industry, persons, industrial processes, qualities of men and things, and the general questions discussed whenever his schoolmates or his elders gather together.
