Contrary to commonly held perceptions the companys casualties were not high .Gurkhas were top class tacticians but very dumb at the operational level when their opponents launched a manoeuvre rather than frontally attacking them.Major General Ochterlony emerged as the master of manoeuvre warfare in this case.He once again proved that English East India Companys private armys officers were as good and even superior to British Army officers.Ochterlony having been born and educated in the USA and being half American from mothers side was not a biased racist like British and brilliantly decided to recruit Gurkhas in English East India Companys army. An audacious move that a self centered and more biased Emglishman may not have accepted. This is despite the fact that Gurkhas cold bloodedly murdered British prisoners in some cases. In the sum total the Company gained strategically. Its northern border became secure for eternity and it gained a valuable local ally that came to its help in 1857 and in all future British wars by virtue of Gurkha recruitment. The Company for the first time was engaged in mountain warfare and the war was a good primer for initiating Mountain Warfare training. One may state that this was was the first solid case where native troops saw British commanders at their worst and lowered British esteem in Indian eyes and may have contributed to 1857 rebellion . The Afghan war came much later and again was a British success as Afghans behaved like mice in 1857 when the English East India Companys position in India was at its lowest ebb.My interest in this war was connected with lack of good battle maps of this war and here in this humble volume I have attempted to fill this vast cartographic deficit in military history. This is a simple military account of Anglo Nepal war of 1814-16, a private war of a private English East India Company against Nepal.I have concentrated on the maps of this war which are almost non existent. The ethics of this was or the morality of it is not in the scope of this book.

Memory, while seemingly a thing of the past, has much to reveal in the present. With its focus on memory, War and Remembrance provides new viewpoints in the field of war representation. Bringing an interdisciplinary approach to discussions of the cultural memory of war, the collection focuses on narratives, either fictional or testimonial, that challenge ideological discourses of war. The acts of remembrance and of waging war are constantly evolving. A range of case studies – analyzing representations of war in art, film, museums, and literature from Nigeria, Australia, Sri Lanka, Canada, and beyond – questions our current approaches to memory studies while offering reinterpretations of established narratives. Throughout, a commitment to Indigenous perspectives, to examining the ongoing legacy of colonialism, and to a continued reckoning with the Second World War foregrounds what is often forgotten in the writing of a single, official history. War and Remembrance invites readers to cast a reflexive look at wars and conflicts past – some of them forgotten, others still vividly commemorated – the better to understand the cultural, political, and social stake of memory as a source of conflict and exchange, of resistance and opposition, and of negotiation and reconciliation.

Field Marshall Sam Manekshaw, former Chief of Staff of the Indian Army once said, "If a man says he is not afraid of dying, he is either lying or is a Gurkha." There is no body of fighters more well known--or more feared--in the British Army than the Brigade of Gurkhas. Formed in June 1815, these fierce soldiers are still world-renowned for their courage, finesse, and their signature weapon, the Khukuri. In their two-hundred year history, they have won major victories, countless medals for bravery, and the hearts of the British people. This book, written by Major General J C Lawrence CBE, with a foreword by HRH The Prince of Wales, is the complete visual history of the regiment, its brave soldiers, and the romanticism imbued by tales told over centuries. With over two hundred magnificent photos, The Gurkhas will delight historians and military enthusiasts alike.

In the 18th century in the town of Gorkha, just north of Kathmandu, ruler Prithvi Narayan fought campaigns against his neighbors and the British. During the fighting his warriors, renowned for their aggression and courage, gained the respect of the British, who appreciated that the steadfast warriors would make excellent soldiers. Upon the declaration of peace in 1816, a partnership was born. This alliance would play a vital role in UK defense over the next two centuries, from surviving the Indian Mutiny of 1857 and fighting in the jungles of Burma to the Khyber Pass, which would keep the Gurkhas in action for ninety years. The First World War sent the Regiment to the trenches, where battalion after battalion was decimated. Some 20 Gurkha battalions were deployed in the Second World War, which was soon increased to 45 following Dunkirk. Around 250,000 Gurkha soldiers would serve and were deployed most significantly in North Africa but also served with distinction in the Italian Campaign and Monte Cassino, as well as the decisive battles of Imphal and Kohima in the Far East. while the Gurkhas saw a drop in overall numbers post-war, they have continued to make integral contributions to many operations, including the Falklands and in Afghanistan, which this book examines extensively, with a special focus on Operation Herrick. In The Gurkha Way, John Sadler tells the story of the Gurkhas from their inception to modern day through interviews, unpublished diaries and correspondence. With over 200 years' experience, these steadfastly loyal soldiers are a link to an imperial past but also a key component of the modern British army. There is no other comparable unit in any of the world’s armies, (with the obvious exception of the Indian Army), or one more respected and loved by the British.

The East India Company at Home, 1757–1857 explores how empire in Asia shaped British country houses, their interiors and the lives of their residents. It includes chapters from researchers based in a wide range of settings such as archives and libraries, museums, heritage organisations, the community of family historians and universities. It moves beyond conventional academic narratives and makes an important contribution to ongoing debates around how empire impacted Britain. The volume focuses on the propertied families of the East India Company at the height of Company rule. From the Battle of Plassey in 1757 to the outbreak of the Indian Uprising in 1857, objects, people and wealth flowed to Britain from Asia. As men in Company service increasingly shifted their activities from trade to military expansion and political administration, a new population of civil servants, army officers, surveyors and surgeons journeyed to India to make their fortunes. These Company men and their families acquired wealth, tastes and identities in India, which travelled home with them to Britain. Their stories, the biographies of their Indian possessions and the narratives of the stately homes in Britain that came to house them, frame our explorations of imperial culture and its British legacies.
