'We shall be in our fatigues on Xmas day and not in our winter quarters as we had hoped. We shall probably have a fairly easy day wherever we are unless Johnny Turk takes it into his head to have a pop at us which would certainly break the monotony.' These were the words that Private Bert Lee of the 7th Battalion Manchester Regiment wrote to his mother from the Gallipoli campaign on 15th December 1915. Tragically for Bert and his family, 'Johnny Turk' did break the monotony and late in the evening of Christmas Day he was shot dead by a Turkish sniper. However, his letters home to his mother survived and they tell a moving tale of the optimism, discomforts, deprivations and camaraderie of the troops who fought in that ill-fated campaign. Bert Lee’s great nephew, Robert Lee, discovered an old folder in his late father’s effects entitled 'Letters from the Dardanelles' together with a photo of Bert’s sad and lonely grave on the Gallipoli Peninsular. He decided that these remarkable documents should be made available to a wider audience, especially with the centenary of the campaign in 2015. Robert has spent a long time researching the Lee family to provide the background to these letters and this, his first book, is the result. Bert Lee had a middle class background but elected to serve as a Private so his letters give an unusual perspective on life in the trenches. Letters from Gallipoli will make an excellent addition to any WWI enthusiast's collection, and an interesting read for any fans of military history.

In the Australian psyche, the Gallipoli campaign is the action on Gallipoli Peninsula. But an important addition to that land campaign was the part played by the Australian submarine HMAS AE2. The AE2 achieved a daring passage through the Dardanelles on 25 April 1915 when Anzac troops were landing on the other side at Anzac Cove. The Royal and French navies' previous attempts at passage had ended in disaster. AE2's mission to 'run amuck' ended after five days in the Sea of Marmara when it was caught by the Turkish Sultanhisar torpedo boat. After being holed, AE2's captain Stoker scuttled the submarine and its crew were saved by Sultanhisar's captain, Ali Riza. Beneath the Dardanelles tells AE2's story from both the Australian and Turkish perspectives, and features extracts from the memoirs of the two captains. Rarely in military books are both sides of a battle presented so evenly. The submarine lay undiscovered on the bottom of the sea until 1998 and awaits its destiny as the largest historical Australian relic of the Gallipoli campaign. The future of AE2 will be newsworthy for years to come and this book makes an important contribution to that story.

This series concentrates on women and the soldiers in the ranks whose lives they shared, assembling a wide body of evidence of their romantic entanglements and domestic concerns. The new military history of recent decades has demanded a broadening of the source base beyond elite accounts or those that concentrate solely on battlefield experiences. Armies did not operate in isolation, and men’s family ties influenced the course of events in a variety of ways. Campfollowing women and children occupied a liminal space in campaign life. Those who travelled "on the strength" of the army received rations in return for providing services such as laundry and nursing, but they could also be grouped with prostitutes and condemned as a ‘burden’ by officers. Parents, wives, and offspring left behind at home remained in soldiers’ thoughts, despite an army culture aimed at replacing kin with regimental ties. Soldiers’ families’ suffering, both on the march and back in Britain, attracted public attention at key points in this period as well. This series provides, for the first time in one place, a wide body of texts relating to common soldiers’ personal lives: the women with whom they became involved, their children, and the families who cared for them. It brings hitherto unpublished material into print for the first time, and resurrects accounts that have not been in wide circulation since the nineteenth century. The collection combines the observations of officers, government officials and others with memoirs and letters from men in the ranks, and from the women themselves. It draws extensively on press accounts, especially in the nineteenth century. The story of Gallipoli has been told many times, but few first-hand accounts exist, and none shows such acute observation as this one by the commander who led the assault on Chunuk Bair: Lieutenant-Colonel W. G. Malone. His diary and letters reveal a man of honesty, wit, knowledge and courage — and tell a moving story we should never forget. Lieutenant-Colonel W. G. Malone, commanding officer of the Wellington Battalion of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force at Gallipoli, is best known for his capture and heroic defence of Chunuk Bair on 8 August 1915. A gifted leader of men, he planned the action with his characteristic good sense and attention to detail. Chunuk Bair was held for two days before being lost in the last of a series of furious counter-attacks. By then William Malone was dead, and New Zealand had lost one of its finest officers. It emerged later that Malone had left behind a detailed diary and a large number of letters to family members and friends. Always shrewd and observant, Malone charts almost daily the events in the year leading up to Chunuk Bair: his preparation for war, the training camps, the voyage to Egypt, landing at Gallipoli, and life on the peninsula during the eventful few months from April to August 1915. Renowned for his imposition of tight discipline, Malone was nevertheless a caring and thoughtful leader of his men, always concerned for their welfare. He also loved his family, and in particular his second wife Ida. His letters to her are among the most moving in this book, and his tender concern for their young family back home shines through. The story of his older sons, three of whom also served in the Great War, forms part of the narrative too, a family story which continues right up to 2012, when Malone’s great-great-grandson was killed on active service in Afghanistan.
