Writing the Nation in Reformation England offers a major re-evaluation of English writing between 1530 and 1580. Studying authors such as Andrew Borde, John Leland, William Thomas, Thomas Smith, and Thomas Wilson, Cathy Shrank highlights the significance of these decades to the formation of English nationhood and examines the impact of the break with Rome on the development of a national language, literary style, and canon. As well as demonstrating the close relationship between literary culture and English identities, it reinvests Tudor writers with a sense of agency. As authors, counsellors, and thinkers they were active citizens participating within, and helping to shape, a national community. In the process, their works were also used to project an image of themselves as authors, playing - and fitted to play - their part in the public domain. In showing how these writers engaged with, and promoted, concepts of national identity, the book makes a significant contribution to our broader understanding of the early modern period, demonstrating that nationhood was not a later Elizabethan phenomenon, and that the Reformation had an immediate impact on English culture, before England emerged as a 'Protestant' nation.

(Humanism is a major topic in the field of research on world history. There are numerous relevant research achievements and books at home and abroad. However, there are little research achievements or books focusing on humanism’s penetration to and influence on each field. The book discusses the process of the spread of humanism to the UK and examines the penetration of humanism to the field of education. It reveals the specific content and characteristics of the thought of English humanist education from aspects including education purpose, teaching content, teaching methods and education thought of teachers; systematically studies the influence of humanist thought on university education and shows the development and changes of English university education in early modern times to readers from aspects including constituent subjects of university society, content of university curriculums and university jurisdiction; interprets the role of humanistic education of universities, shows the historical picture of social and cultural changes of the UK in early modern times and deepens domestic research on humanism and research on the history of university education from aspects including cultivating “future rulers”, “perfect gentlemen” and devout pastors and adding noble cultural literacy. The exposition on the influence of humanist thought on the reform of university education and the relationship between educational changes and social changes in the book is of enlightening significance.)

This collection explores the concept of civility in the early modern period. It addresses a range of writings in English and Scots - among them, conduct manuals, colonial tracts, diaries, letters, dialogues, poetry, drama, chronicles - by English, Welsh and Scots men and women in and about the Atlantic archipelago. It explores the many meanings of civility in the early modern period; it recovers some of the lost associations of civility as well as the complex use of the adjectives 'civil' and 'barbarous' in cultural and colonial encounters.

Great Britain written by Keith Robbins and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-08 with History categories.

This is a timely exploration of national identity in Great Britain over nine hundred years of history. Our attitudes to the nation state are changing - national assemblies in Scotland and Wales and growing pressures for regional assemblies. In his vigorous new survey, Professor Robbins provides the background to these changing attitudes. He considers the development as well as the possible disintegration of the sense of "Britishness" among the inhabitants of Britain and investigates how - and why - they have preserved their own national and regional identities across several centuries of co-existence. Keith Robbins is Vice Chancellor of the University of Wales Lampeter. Among his many books, Longman has also published his highly successful study The Eclipse of a Great Power: Modern Britain 1870-1992 (Second Edition 1994). He is also General Editor of Longman's famous series ofProfiles in Power, with over 20 titles already in print and many more in preparation.
