Icibemba is a language spoken by the majority of the Zambian population. English and Icibemba are two languages from two different language families. The main objective of this study was to examine the various semantic processes involved in the process of borrowing words from English into Icibemba. Data was collected from primary and secondary sources. The data was then analyzed for semantic changes. The discussion concludes that certain words have meanings which correspond with that of the source language and that certain words extend their meaning range whereas others narrow it. Some words extend their meaning range figuratively. Some loanwords also change their emotive value when they are taken over into Icibemba language.

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2023 in the subject African Studies - Linguistics, Kwame Nkrumah University (LANGUAGES), course: LINGUISTICS, language: English, abstract: The process of "borrowing" in linguistics, also known as the incorporation of "loan words," is a universal phenomenon that occurs when two languages or dialects come into contact. In such interactions, words are typically taken from the dominant or "master's" language by the language spoken by those who perceive themselves to be in a weaker position. In the context discussed here, the master's language is English, and the language in a perceived weaker position is IciBemba, a Bantu language widely spoken in Zambia. The findings shed light on the intricate processes involved in the linguistic assimilation of loanwords and contribute to a deeper understanding of language contact phenomena between English and IciBemba. IciBemba has undergone substantial lexical enrichment through the assimilation of loanwords from English. This paper explores the strategies employed in integrating English loanwords into the IciBemba vocabulary. The data for this study were collected from various sources, including books, public gatherings, and fieldwork conducted in Kasama, Northern Province. The theoretical frameworks guiding this exploration are the Theory of Constraint and Repair Strategy (TCRS) proposed by Paradis and Lacharité (1997) and Assimilation Theory articulated by McMahon (1994), Campbell (1998), and Winford (2003). These frameworks provide insights into the phonological and morphological modifications and processes that loanwords undergo when integrated into the IciBemba language.

Newly available outside Africa, this is a comprehensive survey of loanwords that have been incorporated into three Zambian languages, commonly known as Lozi, Nyanja and Tonga. The book gives a list of loanwords from African and European languages into Zambia's major languages. The author additionally introduces the language and linguistic environment in Zambia. Specific to the issue of loanwords, the study raises questions about whether loanwords can be regarded as integral to the language in question; and whether besides the words recorded in this study, there are other foreign lexical items that deserve equal recognition as bona fide loanwords. The author anticipates that in the longer term this kind of information will materially assist the assemblage of data that will lead to the modernisation of Zambian languages, knowledge about the languages, in their spoken and written forms as living cultures, and the prospects of their ever expanding vocabularies.

Productivity is “one of the defining features of human language which allows a native speaker to produce a large number of words and sentences according to the rules of a generative grammar” (Bauer 1991:84). In the English language there exists a vast number of words which were produced by compounding. In my term paper I am going to explain in detail what we understand by the term compound. I am going to look at semantic and syntactic characteristics and how compounds can be distinguished from syntagms which look very similar to them. In the further progress of my manuscript I am going to make a pilot study of the frequency of compounds in newspaper articles from different genres. I give answer to the question which genre seems to favour the use of compounds and which not. Of course my study is not going to be sufficient enough to present generally accepted results but after it prospects can be estimated.

About 95% of all gairaigo loanwords (“words coming from abroad”, i.e. words originating from European languages) derived from the English language and it is estimated that about 5-10% of the Japanese lexicon are of English origin today (Stanlaw, 2004, p.1 + p.13). The status of the English language is high in Japan. It has become a marker of high education and openness to other (Western) cultures. Nearly every Japanese pupil is taught English for at least six years at school (from seventh to twelfth grade), but there is the possibility for private schools to start teaching eikaiwa (English conversation) from third grade on. English classes are obligatory for university students of all subjects, although it should be mentioned that these classes are usually overcrowded (often more than one hundred students) and that they take place only once a week for 90 minutes. A TOEFL test in 1997/98 among 26 Asian na-tions ranked Japan 25th and last together with North Korea (McKenzie, 2008, p 272). The Japanese government made heavy efforts to improve English teaching within the last decade. It was tried to motivate more Japanese pupils to spend a year abroad, only 1,000 Japanese pupils took chance of this opportunity in 2003, although there would have been provided money for 10,000 exchange students. Besides this, there are now more assistant language teachers - mainly from the inner circle of English speaking countries, but also, to a much smaller extent, from former British colonies - at Japanese schools to improve the eikaiwa lessons. The common eigo (English) lessons are still held by Japanese teachers and are strongly text and Grammar based, usually a translation into Japanese is given. Although the Western world was the model for the Japanese modernisation in the 19th and 20th century and English was without any doubt the means of communication with the West, the vast majority of the Japanese population has never become fluent English speakers.

This goal was achieved under the following objectives: To identify linguistic communication challenges encountered by tourists when they are being offered Tourism and hospitality services, To identify the effects of linguistic communication challenges on Tourism and hospitality, To suggest promising solutions to address linguistic communication challenges identified in Tourism and hospitality. As far as hypotheses are concerned the researcher assumed firstly that since Rwanda, a multilingual country with a single and common mother tongue, Tourists are likely to encounter linguistic communication challenges. Secondly, unsatisfied tourists classify Rwanda as a tourists’ nonattractive area and thirdly, training by competent language professionals is one of the strategies to address language problem. The population of this research is a set of 165 Tourists who were purposively selected from the area of the study and 58 service providers who by quota sampling were segmented into 28VNP tourists guides,15 tours guides/drivers,5 community guides, and 10 hotel ,bar restaurant as staff who necessarily interact with tourists. According to the findings, 86 tourists (52%) tourists experienced language challenges related to: the lack of knowledge of international languages, cultural identification by 99 tourists or 60% while nature interpretations related problems were questioned by 66 tourists or 40%. This has negative impact on 91 tourists or 55% to pay unjustified bills, 41 or 25% who lose properties and 33 tourists or 20% experience financial loss; it also inconvenience staff through losing job as said by 20 service providers or (50%), the lack of promotion as said by 15 (30%) and the lack of motivation as it was said by 10 or (20%). Finally, 111 tourists (67%) suggest training by language specialists while 54 tourists (33%) suggest intensive interaction with native speakers to address language related problem. Briefly, this research brought victims of language communication challenges altogether on a round table so as to promote language communication improvement for customers satisfaction.
