Excerpt from English Miracle Plays and Moralities Those who saw the presentation of Everyman by the Elizabethan Stage Society, of the Chester Mysteries by the English Drama Society, will not forget the reverent unclosing of that door, symbol-inscribed, and how long closed! Through which came sounds and rumours of no fairylands forlorn, but the authentic voices Of our own and Chaucer's fellow countrymen. In an age like the present, it is well, now and then, to look back to the beginnings. The Theatre is a topic for all, a pastime for most, an experiment for some, a sincere enthusiasm for, alas, how few! The majority of those who deplore, the mass Of those who defend its modern development, are equally ignorant Of the processes by which it has been evolved, are almost unaware that such processes are implied. Excerpt from English Miracle Plays, Moralities and Interludes: Specimens of the Pre-Elizabethan Drama, Edited, With an Introduction, Notes, and Glossary The small attention devoted to the pre-elizabethan drama in all histories of English Literature is the best excuse for the appearance of the present volume of Specimens. Of the works from which these Specimens have been drawn, the greater part are accessible to students only in the Publications of Societies or in limited editions, expensive and difficult to procure. It seemed therefore to the Editor that a volume which should bring together within a small compass illustrations of the English dramatic literature of more than two centuries, with an unpretentious introduction and commentary, might fairly escape the charge of book-making, and be useful to many lovers of literature unable to make the subject their special study. It may be added that, while no sample can ever perfectly represent the complete work from which it is taken, the peculiar difficulty in illustrating dramatic work by means of specimens hardly applies in this case. It is perhaps ungrateful for one who has derived so much pleasure from these old plays to accuse them of prolixity and lack of unity, but a very small acquaintance with them will convince the student that illustration by means of selected episodes Offers no injustice to the dramatists. Excerpt from English Miracle Plays and Moralities Thee present volume is gratefully dedicated to those members of the Theatrical Profession who have attempted, during recent years, the revival of our early Drama. That this attempt has not achieved much more than a succes d'estime is not to be laid to the charge of those enthusiastic students and sincere artists who, at the cost of loss and disappointment, strove to re-awaken, to the light of modern day, the Sleeping Beauty of mediæval art. Those who saw the presentation of Everyman by the Elizabethan Stage Society, of the Chester Mysteries by the English Drama Society, will not forget the reverent unclosing of that door, symbol-inscribed, and how long closed through which came sounds and rumours of no fairylands forlorn, but the authentic voices of our own and Chaucer's fellow countrymen. Excerpt from English Drama In the following pages, an endeavour is made to tell, in scale and with a due regard to proportion, the story of English drama from its beginnings in the miracle play and morality to the performance of Sheridan's Critic, in the year 1779. A con cluding chapter presents a sketch of the course of the drama since that time, in outline and by way of suggestion, and no more. To have completed the book on the same scale would have demanded another volume. But a better reason for the course here pursued is to be found in the circumstance that, by the time of Sheridan, almost the last vestige of the original dramatic impulse had been lost, the impulse that begot Mar lowe and Shakespeare and carried the great traditions of their art over the Restoration and into the next century; and when the modern revival came, inspired by a renewed appreciation of the great Elizabethans, it was manifestly not a revival on the stage, but in a new species of literature, the drama of the study, as different from the original parent stock as the novel is dif ferent from it or from the drama capable of successful presenta tion on the stage. Excerpt from Great Plays: English It is the fashion among critics to trace the origin of the drama back through literary history, to association with religious ceremonies and a source in religious sentiment; but in studying the development of elaborate dramatic composition and representation they are apt to forget that the true source of dramatic art is a great natural impulse toward feigning passion, character, situation and action, manifest no less in savage than in civilized life, no less in the child than in the man, and to be seen even in the animals that we know best. It is shown in the play of a cat with a captured mouse. You may notice it in a pet dog that coaxes his master to go through some little scene of comedy with him, affects to be fierce as part of the fun, and growls or barks in seeming fury in answer to every pretended rebuke, as if he were sustaining a dialogue on the stage. It comes out strongly in girls playing with their dolls, posing as matrons chatting over household matters and discussing the imaginary ailments of their bisque babies. It takes on more pomp and circumstance in the action of boys building a fort of snow, arranging storming parties, assuming the roles of popular heroes, and carrying on a mimic war. In men and women this dramatic instinct weakens somewhat among the realities of life, but it shapes many of our daydreams, gives a touch of elegant affectation to some of our social gatherings, and finds its ultimate gratification in the splendid representations of the modern theatre. It is said that the English drama rose out of the mystery, miracle and morality plays of the Church; and the statement is true so far as dramatic form is concerned; but it must be remembered that dramatic spirit was not the consequence but the cause of these plays. When the Roman Empire failed, the tide of barbarism went over the world like a deluge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The English Morality Play written by Robert A Potter and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-07-14 with Drama categories.

First published in 1975, The English Morality Play is the extended history of the English morality play, its persistence and flourishing as a dramatic tradition. The book sheds light on the intellectual and social origins of the morality play, its relationship to the medieval Corpus Christi cycle plays, its subject, purpose, conditions of original staging, and the abstract characters of its dramatis personae. The changing tradition is revealed within Renaissance drama, in the works of Skelton and Medwall, and the Reformation plays of Lindsay, Bale and Udall, as the morality play altered under the pressure of political events, escaped from the general suppression of religious drama, and in complex ways came to influence the dramatic conceptions of Marlowe, Shakespeare and Ben Jonson. Contemporary parallels to the English morality tradition in European drama are investigated, as is the rediscovery of the texts of the plays by eighteenth- and nineteenth-century critics. In the final chapter, Dr. Potter examines the revival of the morality tradition on the twentieth-century stage and its influence on such dramatists as Bernard Shaw, T. S. Eliot, W. B. Yeats and Bertolt Brecht. This book will be of interest to students of literature and drama.

The mystery and morality play were two of the three principal kinds of vernacular drama in Europe during the Middle Ages. Mystery plays, usually representing biblical subjects, developed from dramas presented in Latin by churchmen on sacred premises, depicting subjects like the Creation, Adam and Eve and the Last Judgment. They were often performed together in cycles which could last for days at special festivals and occasions. The morality play is an allegorical drama, in which the characters personify moral qualities and undergo didactic lessons. The action centres on a hero, such as Mankind, whose inherent weaknesses are assaulted by personified diabolic forces like the Seven Deadly Sins, but who may choose redemption and enlist the aid of such figures as Mercy, Justice, Temperance and Truth. This eBook presents a comprehensive collection of mystery and morality plays, with numerous illustrations, rare medieval texts, informative introductions and the usual Delphi bonus material.
