Excerpt from English Painters This brief sketch of the rise and progress of Painting in Eng land has been drawn from a variety of sources. The little that can be traced of artistic work previous to the end of the fifteenth century does not fill many pages. Ignorance, carelessness, and iconoclastic rage all contributed to the defacement of paintings which we have every reason to believe at one time abounded in our churches and public buildings, as they did at the same period in Italy; and there is good evidence that some of our early English artists are not to be despised. Our forefathers were too much engaged in the rough contests of war to care much for the arts of peace. In the sixteenth century several foreign artists of more or less celebrity were induced to visit and stay in England. Foremost of these was Holbein, and to his example English artists are deeply indebted. In the next century there were a few excellent miniature pain ters, whose work is not to be surpassed at the present day, and then came a succession of foreigners - Rubens and Van Dyck from Flanders, Lely and Kneller from Germany, and a hostviii preface. Excerpt from The Lives of the Most Eminent British Painters, Vol. 1 Besides this work of editing, it was deemed desirable, for the further utility of a standard work, that it should be continued down to the present day. I have therefore prepared short biographies of some of the most eminent British artists who have died since Cunningham's time. Want of space has compelled the omission of many names that otherwise might well claim a place, especially those of our great water-colour painters, who have, without doubt, risen to high eminence. Possibly their lives may be added at some future time, but for the present I have been obliged to confine my work exclusively to painters in oil, selecting among these such as are best known to fame, or who seemed most noteworthy. Continuations are gene rally dull affairs, and I cannot pretend that my Lives are written in the same lively vein as Cunningham's: still I hope they will not be found without value and interest. And as our interest in any work is always greater if we know something of the author, I have also added a short account of Allan Cunningham himself - the sturdy Scotch stonemason, who by his own unaided exertions achieved both independence and fame, and who has written one of the best works of biography in the English language. Something of the relation of English to Continental Art has also been indicated. I have studied at first hand the great majority of the paintings that I have described; and in judging of them my conclusions are my own. In covering so wide a field within the limits of a single volume, it was impossible to describe the work of all painters of merit. I have therefore selected for descrip tion whatever interested me most, at the same time aim ing at keeping clear the general developments in each period. Landscape, England's greatest contribution to painting, has been given more space than portraiture. Imaginative figure-composition, though it ceased for a long period to exist in England, is one of the oldest as it is one of the newest of English pictorial arts. It has brought forth our most varied powers 0 of invention; and the illus trations here are a reminder that Hogarth and Blake, Stevens and holman-hunt, and even Lamb and Spencer are of the same race as the great mediaeval illuminators and wall-painters.
