A stunning collection of English folklore featuring stories of beasts, giants, ghosts, saints, and the Devil, as well as moral tales and tales of origins. Master storyteller, social historian, and folklorist Sybil Marshall scoured English history to bring together a fascinating collection of folk tales in one glorious edition. Out-of-print for over thirty years, Overlook is re-issuing this bewitching book to enchant a new audience. From the great mass of folk tales that exists, Sybil Marshall has chosen a wide variety of stories, retelling them with wit and suspense. We have her tales of the little people and of giants, of the Devil and the saints, and supernatural and moral tales. Let Sybil Marshall lead you through the old English countryside, exploring the beliefs and legends of time gone by. This beautiful edition, complete with wood engraved illustrations by John Lawrence, will entertain, educate, and ensnare audiences of all ages. “A compilation of vivid, sometimes fearsome stories . . . The England we visit here has no afternoon teas or jolly rounds of cricket on lovely green lawns. In these pages, the sophisticated reader steps onto older, darker soil half-soaked in blood, superstition, and magic. . . . Wood engravings by John Lawrence deepen our sense of the blackened accretion of centuries in this fascinating collection.” —Meghan Cox Gurdon, The Wall Street Journal

Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 2, Martin Luther University, course: Teaching English in a Postcolonial Context , language: English, abstract: Working as a teacher can often be very difficult. There are not just the questions of how to structure the lesson or motivate the students, but also whether or not the various topics are accepted by them and helpful in learning a language. In his book “The Folktale” Thompson points out that, “The teller of stories has everywhere and always found eager listeners.” As a result, folktales seem to be incorporated very easily into a lesson. In this paper, I want to look at the use of folktales in a classroom, where English as a second language is being taught. First of all, however, I want to consider the definition of folktales and explain the hidden subtypes behind the term. Apart from looking at the origins of a folktale, or folklore in general, I want to take a look at their function. Later on, I will also discuss the reasons for using these in school. Finally, I want to provide the reader with a variety of activities that combined can be used with reading folktales.

This is a golden treasury of over one hundred English folktales captured in the form they were first collected in past centuries. Read these classic tales as they would have been told when storytelling was a living art – when the audience believed in boggarts and hobgoblins, local witches and will-o’-the-wisps, ghosts and giants, cunning foxes and royal frogs. Find “Jack the Giantkiller”, “Tom Tit Tot” and other quintessentially English favourites, alongside interesting borrowings, such as an English version of the Grimms’ “Little Snow White” – as well as bedtime frighteners, including “Captain Murderer”, as told to Charles Dickens by his childhood nurse. Neil Philip has provided a full introduction and source notes on each story that illustrate each tale’s journey from mouth to page, and what has happened to them on the way. These tales rank among the finest English short stories of all time in their richness of metaphor and plot and their great verbal dash and daring.

This enchanting collection of traditional English folktales reflects the depth and diversity of the folk heritage of Britain, and illustrates the ties between stories, land, and people. The editors present an enticing assortment of more than 50 tales, gathered from practicing storytellers and organized into sections based on broad themes—The Fool in All His Glory, Wily Wagers and Tall Tales, Holy Days and Days of Heroes, and so forth. There's a story for every listener—from Teeny Tiny and The Pixies' Beds for young children to spooky ghost stories and witch tales, such as Wild Edric and Jenny Greenteeth for older readers and listeners. For each tale, the authors cite a region of origin. Like other titles in the series, the book contains background information: notes on the tales, a brief history of England, a map, photographs, a glossary, and a bibliography of sources. Brief biographies of the tellers are also included. All of these elements combine to form an apt resource for read-alouds and programs, an indispensable source for storytellers, and a great research tool for students. All grade levels.
