Martin Schongauer (ca. 1450?1491) was the greatest Northern European printmaker of his time. A painter by training, he elevated engraving from a minor off-shoot of the goldsmith?s craft to a popular and prestigious art. His technical and artistic achievements opened the way to many followers, first and foremost Albrecht Durer. Max Lehrs?s authoritative catalogue of Schongauer?s prints was first published in 1925, as part of his encyclopedic treatise on the early engravers of northern Europe, and has long been out of print. For each engraving in Schongauer?s oeuvre, the catalogue provides a detailed description of the engraving, its variant states (if any), lists of impressions and watermarks, a discussion and bibliography of previous research, and a listing of engraved copies and other artwork inspired by the engraving. The catalogue distinguishes several grades of quality among the impressions, and notes the different watermarks represented by each grade, a major aide in the dating of the prints, and an invaluable tool to the art historian and collector. This volume presents the first English edition of the catalogue, adding reproductions of all the engravings and of their major variant states. Introductions by AlanShestack (1969) and Charles Minott (1971) are included, which present advances in Schongauer scholarship since Lehrs. The catalogue is followed by an illustrated list of watermarks, a list of copies and forgeries misattributed to Schongauer by earlier scholars, a list of collections mentioned in the text, and an index of the engravings.

4to. Cloth in d-j. This catalogue raisonné is the only single volume to contain all Stubbs's known engravings and provides a complete record of prints made by others after his works. Introductory essays consider Stubbs's relationships with other artists, particularly his engravers, and examine how the prints were originally marketed. Part 1 covers the more important prints issued during Stubbs's lifetime, some of which are published here for the first time. Each of the 218 entries is fully illustrated and accompanied by comparative material. Part 2 comprises 440 supplementary entries and indicates the nature and extent of Stubbs's posthumous reputation. This book also is the first substantial review of the work of a major 18th century British painter by reference to the important, but neglected, medium of reproductive prints.

Excerpt from A Handbook of the S. P: Avery Collection of Prints and Art Books in the New York Public Library Mr. Samuel P.Avery showed a fondness for prints from early boyhood, and made scrap-books of whatever pictorial material came to his hand. He became an engraver on wood, and practised that art until 1865 or 1866. Then came the call to take charge of the American art exhibit at the Paris Exposition of 1867. That appointment, and the opportunities which it afforded, determined him to abandon engraving and engage in the business of dealing in works of art. This brought greatly increased facilities for the gratification of his love for prints, particularly etchings; and as lack of means prevented him from collecting the works of the old masters, he concluded to confine himself to the productions of living or recent artists. His business soon lay with the foreign artists, especially the French, and he gradually made the acquaintance of a large number who either etched, engraved or lithographed. Mr. Avery made it a point to secure one or more examples of the work of nearly every contemporary artist whom he had met or of whom he had heard. The result is the present collection of 17, 775 etchings and lithographs, representing 978 artists, and offering a comprehensive view of the state of these arts during the past fifty years, particularly in France, where they have been most cultivated. While the work is mainly by Frenchmen, other nationalities are also represented, particularly the German, Dutch, Belgian and English. The Inverted Line written by George Alexander Walker and has been published by The Porcupine's Quill this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with Art categories.

George A Walker did not make it into "An Engraver's Globe," and looking through this collection of his wood engravings I see again exactly why. An editor should not present as a fool one who has persisted in his folly to become wise if the wisdom cannot really be shown in the space available: better to omit than risk making him look silly. On the evidence of just a couple of works George Walker does look clumsy in a field where finesse is prized, perhaps to excess. But give him his head, as here, and you see an artist of sustained and wacky integrity half way between Posada and Krazy Kat. ... Is the work any good? Yes, of course it is. Of course, too, if you go for rough trade in wood engraving, you end where you began: some of this does look like beginner's work. But Walker does things with engraving I've not seen anyone else do: look at "Raguwl, Angel of Vengeance." His images of people in cars are startlingly expressive: he can draw -- look at "The Printer"'s hand and the break of light around him; has Walker bodged the ear here to prove he "can't" draw (so "there"!)? But he can and does. His small images have power and sometimes even humour and tenderness, even though he presents himself as an obsessive, the Mad Hatter of wood engraving.'
