Abstract: Abstract The purpose of this study is to design and investigate the effects of an instructional program and to examine ways that storytelling approach can be used to enhance creativity and problem solving for preschool children. Participants are 52 K3 children in a kindergarten, 30 boys and 22 girls. A quasi-experimental pre-posttest research design was employed. Two of the six kindergarten classes were assigned to - experimental or comparison classes. The Teacher-researcher implemented the instructional program in the experimental class 2 to 3 times weekly for 6 weeks while teacher in the control group continued using the current teaching methods. Both teachers in two classes were Qualified Kindergarten Teacher who currently used thematic approach in their teaching. Children in the two classes received more or less the same materials and units. Various measures of creativity and problem solving were administered. Results showed that children in the experimental group gained more than children in the comparison class on the all the aspects of fluency, flexibility, originality, creative idea and problem solving skills. The process of identifying techniques for fostering creativity, and applying these theoretical constructs in real-world educational activities, is, by nature, multifaceted and not straightforward, pertaining to several fields such as cognitive theory and psychology. Furthermore, the quantification of the impact of different activities on creativity is a challenging and not yet thoroughly investigated task. In this paper, we present Semantic Lateral Thinking as a candidate for fostering creative thinking within storytelling educational activities. We describe a set of tools implementing Semantic Lateral Thinking techniques over storytelling, and we present Creative Stories, a digital storytelling game incorporating these tools. Furthermore, we propose a metric for quantifying creativity within the game, leading to the evaluation of the creativity exhibited in the stories produced within the game in relation to the usage of the Semantic Lateral Thinking stimuli provided by the relevant tools. ÿThe aim of this book is to share a relatively loose collection of studies using digital storytelling as a pedagogical tool in Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). The book takes an informed social justice approach to teaching and learning, at the heart of which is the exploration of DST as a practice of voice and agency. Voice and agency are important in excavating and recovering subjugated identities, and moving the concerns of those occupying subaltern spaces to the mainstream of teaching and learning. Yet this discursive shift is not without inherent challenges. Multi-modal technologies are reflective of wider inequities in the so-called technological divide. Whilst this is a book about higher education, there are important lessons for schooling. On the one hand, the book is a powerful demonstration of the potential of DST for enhancing learning in schools, particularly in schools serving the poor and marginalised. On the other hand, improving teaching and learning in higher education, through the creative use of technology, is essential to overcome the learning challenges of those entering tertiary level institutions.
