When we work or play through digital technologies – we also live in them. Communities form, conversations and social movements emerge spontaneously and through careful offline planning. While we have used disembodied communication and transportation technologies in the past – and still do – we have never before actually synchronously inhabited these communicative spaces, routes and networks in quite the way we do now. Digital Diasporas engages conversations across a selection of contemporary (gendered) Indian identified networks online: “Desis” creating place through labour and affective network formation in secondlife, Indian (diasporic) women engaged in digital domesticity, to Indian digital feminists engaged in debate and dialogue through Twitter. Through particular conversations and ethnographic journeys and linking back to personal and South Asian histories of Internet mediation, Gajjala and her co-authors reveal how affect and gendered digital labour combine in the formation of global socio-economic environment.

Nul pays plus que l'Inde ne suscite autant de sentiments contradictoires. Ses paysages contrastés, ses religions, ses castes, ses hommes et ses femmes ont attisé les imaginations occidentales depuis des siècles. Aux antipodes de ce cliché orientaliste, les femmes indiennes sont représentées comme des victimes d'un système patriarcal archaïque opposé au nôtre. Cette vision a-historique, décontextualisée et universalisante des femmes indiennes a conforté les féministes libérales dans leur construction essentialiste des femmes comme victimes plutôt que comme agents de résistance et de changement. A travers la situation des femmes actives en pays tamoul, Kamala Marius plaide pour une interprétation multiple des inégalités et des facteurs de domination : la précarité du statut des femmes prenant le pas sur d'autres facteurs comme la caste, la classe, les lieux. Sa recherche montre aussi que les mobilités spatiales et sociales des femmes favorisent une redéfinition des rapports de genre, de caste et de communauté. Elle souligne combien ce processus cumulatif des mobilités constitue une source d'empowerment et d'émancipation. L'apport de cet ouvrage est de trois ordres : empirique d'abord, présentant un panorama complet et commenté d'une large palette des inégalités genrées en Inde ; théorique et conceptuel ensuite, couvrant un champ de recherche allant du féminisme postcolonial aux subaltern studies ; réflexif enfin, appuyé sur de solides investigations de terrain. Son sujet qui considère à la fois l'individu et le groupe au travers de leurs pratiques, de leurs discours et de leurs représentations invite à dépasser les clivages disciplinaires. Son terrain d'étude, l'Inde, est systématiquement mis en perspective avec son parcours et son itinéraire personnel posant ainsi les jalons d'une réflexion critique novatrice.
