C'est une histoire où les siècles se comptent par dizaines qu'il faut interroger lorsque l'on s'intéresse au passé juif. Trois angles d'approche sont ici privilégiés. A travers les siècles, les juifs ont été confrontés à de multiples ruptures qui ont remis en cause leur existence même. Entre les malheurs de l'histoire et la réassurance que procurent la mémoire et la tradition, une identité juive s'est-elle constituée ? Selon quelles tensions se perçoit-elle elle-même ? La mise en évidence d'une telle diversification dans l'appropriation du passé conduit à un deuxième questionnement : comment caractériser la relation des juifs et des nations au passé juif ? Trois modalités, communautaires ou individuelles, sont déclinées : l'occultation ; la recomposition et relecture ; l'instrumentalisation des textes et des événements. Enfin, la question des usages et enjeux du patrimoine juif a paru mériter un traitement spécifique, parce qu'il est un patrimoine minoritaire, même en Israël, et que, plus que les autres patrimoines, il a subi des destructions massives et répétées. Mais il témoigne aussi de l'intrication de l'histoire des juifs dans l'histoire des nations. Et sa conservation et sa mise en valeur sont un enjeu commun aux juifs et aux non-juifs.

Avec l'éclatement du rêve d'une histoire mondiale unifiée, le débat sur Histoire et Mémoire est à l'ordre du jour. L'Afrique n'y fait pas exception, mais à sa manière. Cet ouvrage n'est pas une collection de " lieux de mémoire " relevant d'un patrimoine national dûment authentifié, comme dans le cas français. Il s'agit plutôt d'une illustration de la manière dont les sociétés africaines de jadis et d'aujourd'hui revisitent leur passé : leurs interrogations reflètent moins la nostalgie d'une antiquité en déshérence que les besoins d'une histoire en train de se forger. La fonction sociale de la mémoire dans les traditions orales révèle des dynamiques déjà décelables dans les anciennes remémorations. Le moment de la colonisation sera celui de l'étouffement ou de la domination des legs du passé, allant jusqu'à la récupération ou même à la destruction des lieux où s'accrochaient les identités des peuples soumis. Mais l'aspect le plus intéressant est la façon dont les cultures africaines ont réinterprété leurs traditions selon les normes et les besoins de leur nouvelle expérience historique, confrontée à la domination étrangère : l'africanisme blanc a pénétré les cultures noires, mais celles-ci ont aussi fait de la science du colonisateur un outil de résistance des colonisés. Par delà ces jeux du traditionalisme sous sa forme moderne, on assiste même à des réappropriations des repères plantés par l'Occident et à la participation à sa ferveur commémorative autour de sites monumentaux ou de grandes dates. Tous les exemples font réfléchir sur ces regards croisés et sur ce jeu de réinterprétations du passé africain, confronté à l'ethnographie étrangère. Sans se complaire dans la description de ces représentations, le livre les met en situation historique avec la précision critique nécessaire. C'est aussi un bel exemple d'historiographie de l'Afrique. L'ensemble du continent au sud du Sahara est couvert, reflétant la diversité des climats culturels : du Sénégal à Madagascar, du Zimbabwe au Niger, des Grands Lacs au golfe de Guinée, de l'Afrique du Sud à l'Ethiopie, et des espaces incertains de l'ancien Ghana à l'utopie africaine du cinéma francophone.

Le maréchal-ferrant exerce un métier riche de traditions. L’opposition polémique tradition/traditionalisme est ici discutée. À la lumière des multiples données recueillies sur le terrain auprès d’une cinquantaine d’acteurs, d’observations (manifestations professionnelles), et de journées d’accompagnement du maréchal dans sa nouvelle pratique professionnelle, se construit une problématique qui organise cette recherche, autour de la construction identitaire des maréchaux en relation avec une mémoire professionnelle qui se laisse interpréter en termes de mémoire collective. La construction identitaire s’avère actuellement problématique compte tenu d’une rupture dans l’histoire des pratiques et des techniques de métier, rupture qui fait suite à la mécanisation des campagnes, laquelle provoque une crise du métier. Des pratiques jusque-là conjointes entre forge et ferrage sont maintenant objet de dissociations. La forge, valorisée dans les concours de maréchalerie surgit comme activité polémique et polarise des attitudes positives ou négatives, convoquant toute une rhétorique de métier destinée à légitimer des conceptions différentes de la profession, des savoirs et pratiques divers. Ils sont objets de reconstructions légitimantes d’une nouvelle identité. Le nouveau métier qui place le cheval au centre et non plus le maréchal est historiquement perdant, et le maréchal a perdu son prestige. L’angle d’approche est celui des pratiques et savoirs de métier dans leur interconnexion, examinés dans leur double dimension de tradition et d’innovation, mettant en jeu un invariant : l’inventivité du maréchal, déjà décrite dans les fondements mythiques du métier

The Jews of France have been liberated for over two centuries; they have been considered free citizens and equal to their compatriots. What purpose, then, does it serve to study their citizenship today? Until World War II, French Jews called themselves ""Israelites;"" they were deeply patriotic and had found a place for themselves in France's ""community of citizens."" However outbursts of anti-Semitism during that period reminded them that their new status prevented neither hate nor rejection; they had to persevere in the struggle for citizenship equity.France has not been spared from recent movements demanding recognition of particular identities in the public space. Ethnicity in French political life has become increasingly obvious, in spite of the constant assertion of ""republican values."" Questions about immigration, nationality, and integration are constantly in the forefront of public life. Though, in France, the existence of ethnic and religious communities is not legally recognized, certain groups are designated as separate, often creating conflicts among them.

In the past thirty years, the study of French-Indian relations in the center of North America has emerged as an important field for examining the complex relationships that defined a vast geographical area, including the Great Lakes region, the Illinois Country, the Missouri River Valley, and Upper and Lower Louisiana.
